Dear future Pathway Student,

First let me introduce myself, my name is Maya Rollins and by the time you read this I
will be a Second Year Pathway Student. So listen well to what I have to say!
"I'm starting the Pathways program next semester, what do I do? How do I get the most
out of the semester?"
I too was at this stage what do I have to do, what I do from there on. Being a freshman in college
is totally different than high school. Everything you do is not handed to you, you have to do it
yourself, earn it. Dont be discouraged its quite amazing, you feel more as an adult, independent.
One misconception I had about college was that obtaining classes would be easy, the truth is this
particular community college is very impacted. Over 20,000 students attend this particular
school, making transfers to other universities quite difficult. But fear not being in Pathways
allows you to take classes that you need immediately. This is one of the biggest perks being a
Pathways student, priority registration, free tutoring, and guidance, that you yourself has gained.
In the college one course reader (you will be reading this in Coll01 class) there is a section about
help seeking in which you, yourself has done by getting into Pathways,
Help-seeking. The final component of the college student role is engagement in helpseeking behaviors. Community college students are expected to seek out help in ways that are
more proactive and self-directed than is expected of high school students or employees. They
must do this in a timely manner and in ways that are more culturally delineated with a stronger
sense of what they need- this often fundamentally different from previous forms of help-seeking
with which role aspirants are likely familiar. (Coll01 p.46)
There are many perks of being a Pathway student, the main benefits I already stated are all held
in the TLC. The TLC is where your success coaches stay, tutors, computers where you can do
homework and books to borrow for classes. All this is there to help students succeed and stay in
school. Once in Pathways you will have to take college 01 course and you will have to work in
groups. Working in groups can be great or terrible depending on who you have in your group.
For the most part individuals in your group will most likely be easy to work with because they do
too want to succeed, because they are also in Pathways. In one of my quick writes I wrote about
time management and that is going to be one of the biggest topics in the course and also in you
college school life. A golden line from the course reader, Behaviors and attitudes that are linked
to the definition and expectations of a specific role are called role-related behaviors.(Coll01 p.
18) During this semester I read Spare Parts by Joshua Davis, many of the activities I did in
College 01 class had to do with book. Just a heads up during this course you will be reading a
book and majority of your work would be based on it. Dont fret starting a-new, college is
amazing and fun and being in Pathways will definitely make sure that it will stay that way.
