Thislessonintroducesstudentstotheprocessofsilkscreening,thattheywilluse
thistechniquetocreateapatternandprintitonatshirtprovided.Thestudentswillcreatea
uniquerepresentationalpatterntoprintonthefrontoftheshirt.Aswellthestudentswillprint
acollaborativepatternonthebackoftheshirt.
Summary:
Studentswillarriveandworkontheirwarmupastheotherstudentsarrive.Once
itistimetobegintheteacherwillcalltheclasstoattention.Teacherwillleadadiscussion

askingthestudentsvariousquestionstoengagetheminthelessonandencouragelearning.
Afterthepresentationteacherwilldemonstratetheprintingprocessofscreenprintingtothe
studentsgoingoverexactobladesafetyandtheuseofcuttingboards.Oncethedemois
finishedstudentswilldrawouttheirtemplatewithpencil.Thentheywillgobackovertheir
templetinsharpiemarkingtheareasthattheywillbecuttingoutoftheirtemplet.Studentswill
thenselecttheirinkcolorandproceedtoaprintingstationifavailable.ifunavailabletheywill
workonpastprojects.Onceatprintingstationstudentswillcomplete13printsonpaperof
theirtemplet.Oncetheyhavefinishedtheywillalerttheteacherwhowillassistthestudents
withtheprintingontheirtshirt.Theywillthenhangtheshirttodryonthecartandworkan
artiststatementabouttheirprint.Whenthatiscompletedtheywillworkonpastprojectsuntil
theotherstudentsfinish.Oncetheyareallfinishedtheywilldiscusstheprints.

StepbyStep

1. Design
yourprint.Thinkofsomethinginteresting
anddrawitontoapieceofpaper.Don'tworryabout
coloringorshadingityou'llbecuttingitoutand
usingtherestofitasastencil

2. Useacraftknifetocutoutallthecolouredpartsof
yourdesign.Keepthesurroundingblankpaperin
tact.Youhavenowmadeyourstencil.

3. Putyourstencilon
topofyourmaterial(paper
ortshirt)andthescreen
ontopofthestencil.Place
thestencilsothemeshisdirectlyontop(thetwoshouldbe
touching)andthehandlesarefacingup.Ifthereisspace
betweentheedgesofyourstencilandtheedgesofyourscreen,
putmaskingtapeontheunderside.Youdon'twantpaint
leakingwhereitshouldn'tleak.

4. Spoon
outsomepaint.Makealineatthetopofthe
screen(thepartfurthestawayfromyou).Youdon't
wantpaintontopofthestencilatthemoment.Tryto
spoonoutasmuchpaintasyouthinkwouldcoverthe
stencil.

5. Usethesqueegeeto
spreadthepaintoverthemesh.Trytodoitwithonedownwards
movementortheleastnumberofstrokespossible.Thismakesit

ExactoBladeSafetyTips:

1. Usingacuttingboardormatplacedona
stablesurface,gripthehandleoftheknife
withallfourfingersandplaceyourthumbon
thecollar.

2. Ifpossible,securethematerialinaclamp
beforecutting.Otherwise,gripthematerial
behindthecuttingblade.

3. ALWAYScutawayfromyourbody,andbesureothersarenotinthepathifthe
knifeshouldslip.

4. Avoid Talking or Looking Away when Cutting:


concentrate on the job at hand.
Neverlookawayorconversewithpeopleasyoucut.

5. Whencuttingalonganystraightedge,takecarethattheknifebladeremainsparallelto
thestraightedgefortheentirelengthofthecut.Thisisnotanaturalmotionthehand
wouldprefertotravelinanarc.Iftheknifeisallowedtotilttowardsthestraightedge,it
willtravelupovertheedgeofthestraightedgeandcutyourlefthand.
