New Technology

Spicing up an Old
Boring Course!
How The Apple Watch Can Make Oral Pathology More
Interactive

Intended Audience
The intended audience for this course will be first
year dental students
The program already provides an apple laptop and
ipad to each new student (tied into tuition cost)
All students also have an iphone as a requirement for
Axium (a required software program used for patient
charts) that is only compatible with apple devices.
I would have the apple watch added to the provided
technology first year.

Millennials and Technology

Born into the world of technology
These students are comfortable multi-tasking with
several different technology platforms

The integration of technology in the classroom

is one of the most effective ways to improve
student interest and engagement
Millennials are very team oriented
Tying teamwork and technology together is a very
effective teaching practice

in Education and Practice. Organization Development Journal, Winter, 63-75.

Oral Pathology
Arguably, the most boring class in the dental school curricula
Consists of hundreds of slides of histology and images of
lesions
The only person in the room that is excited about the
content is the instructor!
The content is critically important!
45,750 cases of oral/ pharyngeal cancer will be diagnosed this year in
the US.
Only 50% 5 year survival rate
8650 deaths per year (1 person per hour, 24 hrs a day)
This is just the cancer that can be detected, there are many other
diseases to be concerned with.

How the Apple Watch Can

Help
Quizzes during lecture to give real-time results
that let the instructor know if the students are
understanding the material as they go
Student randomizer
Group selection
Interact with and control lecture material
Heart rate monitor can alert the instructor that
they need to liven things up!

Customized Learning and

Exams
With a large national question bank, create exams that really test the extent of
the students knowledge
Exam questions would change based on how student is doing
If a question is missed, the next question will be an easier question with the same type of
content
If a question is marked correctly, the next question will be slightly harder

Adaptive exams give students a more customized learning experience

Graded participation based on apple watch student randomizer
Graduate level and above prefer cold calling and equal participation if open discussions will be
significant portion of grade

New App for Oral Pathology

Diagnosis
The apple watch can be a great platform for
medical and dental apps
A future app can be one that helps practitioners
identify and diagnose oral pathology
Series of questions related to location, description, size,
texture etc. to give several differential diagnosis options
Scroll through images to assist in identification of lesions
that need to be biopsied

Apple Watch Assignment

Group project
Group selected with apple watch
Images disseminated to each group via the watch
Apple watch will be used to control and interact with
presentation material

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course students will be able to:

Clinically identify lesions that will require biopsy

Based on histology be able to diagnose oral pathology
Be able to treatment plan appropriate treatment for the patient
Be able to produce a professional presentation and deliver that
presentation to peers, educating them on a specific disease and
available treatment modalities
Understand how to use technology to enhance diagnostic ability
Doubling time of information is growing too quickly to rely on books

The Benefit of Technology

More engaged students
Student randomizer
Drawing students into the conversation
Participation and engagement of even shy students

Student-centered learning
Enforce that participation goes beyond attendance

Group selection
Team work
Allowing complex questions to be solved together

Less work for the instructor

Quizzes graded in real time
National question bank

More freedom in the classroom

Able to control presentation material from the watch
