Reading
1st Grade
10/15/15~ 20 minutes
Readiness words are important to be able to read.
We can practice readiness words in fun ways.
Why are readiness words important to be able to read?
What are effective ways we can practice reading?
CC.1.1.1.D: Know and apply grade level phonics and word
analysis skills in decoding words.
Identify common consonant diagraphs, final-e,
and common vowel teams.
Decode one and two-syllable words with common
patterns.
Read grade level words with inflectional endings.
Read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
Students, while playing a version of Bingo in small
groups with marshmallows, will demonstrate decoding
by reciting and repeating the given word before
correctly marking their Bingo sheet (80% accuracy of
37 given words will be deemed acceptable).

Formative Assessment: Observation/completion (data

notebook check for each word)
Summative Assessment: Nonethis lesson is designed
to be a review for a more formal, summative
assessment.
ISTE Standard: Communication and Collaboration (Bingo is a
social game, even though the students will be operating their
own, separate Bingo cards).
Framework for 21st Century Learning:
Communication/Collaboration (refer to description regarding
ISTE standard above)
Accommodations: Large Print Bingo Sheets for the Visually
Impaired
Modifications: Lower/Higher Level Vocabulary Words used for
students not within the normal developmental range (this, of
course, varying greatly at the start of 1st Grade)

I think my lesson, overall, went very well. It was engaging and

targeted important sight words. I think one of the biggest
criticisms from my peers was my selection of the particular
vocabulary words (it wasnt random) and my closure could
have used more work. I also couldnt find a professional way to
record/make notes of student progress in a data notebook
while also continually engaging the students in the Bingo
game. Finding a more efficient way to record the formative
assessment would be helpful (perhaps even having the
students record their own progress).
