On October 4, 1957, Sputnik 1 became the first

artificial satellite to be successfully launched into
space. While man had officially crossed the barrier
some thirteen years ago, the launch of Sputnik
proved man's mastery of controlled spaceflight, and
more importantly, Russia's new strike capabilities.
Sputnik 1 marked the beginning of the Space Race
that would have both East and West fight tooth and
nail for dominion of the Final Frontier. Almost three
years later, on April 12, 1961, Man himself would
break free of his Earthly bonds, and take his first
steps into space, yet another Soviet victory. The US
refused to be bested by the seemingly backwards
communists, and would finally set foot on the moon
in July of 1969. With that, Man had finally set foot
on an alien world; a new era of exploration had
begun.
Since then, we have sent probes into the far reaches
of the Solar System, new planets outside of our
neightboorhood have been discovered, some even
brimming with the building blocks of life. "The
surface of the Earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean.
Recently we've waded a little way out, maybe ankledeep, and the water seems inviting."
