Title of the Lesson: "My Friends Are Unique"


Brief Description of the lesson: Teacher will instruct children in small groups of 4 (2 per sub
group) to draw a portrait of their peer.

Objective(s) :
SWBAT understand that their peer is unique in terms of outer appearance. SWBAT explore the
various things that make us unique: skin color, eye color, facial structure, etc.
Key Vocabulary: complexion, unique, etc.
Connection to Standards :
CCSS.PK.1.1.F - Demonstrates awareness of connections between prior and new knowledge.

Relevance/Rationale:
Children at the preschool age are developing a sense of self and a sense of others. In a world
where biasses exist, children must learn to make their own fair judgments of the people they will
encounter.

Total: 20 MIN for each group of 3 children

Instructional Context:
This activity is designed as a small group learning experience. Children will be instructed in small
groups of 2 to provide better one to one instruction. Only two groups will work with the teacher at
a time.
Procedure:
Students will be called by the Teacher during Free Choice.. They will gather at the table. All materials will be
laid out on the table. The Teacher will introduce the activity to the children. The children will work with a
partner to draw their partner.
Pre-Assessment Question:
What made the Bee a Bee? What made the Bear a bear?
Teacher will work with students to describe the physical characteristics of each animal and how it makes them
unique. Teacher will discuss how different characteristics such as the bear are not scary but special and
beautiful.
Activity: Students will begin portraits. Teacher will rotate to watch children working.
Post-Assessment: What about your friend is beautiful and unique?
