Professionalism
With Students:
Dress appropriately shirt/skirt length, no jeans or open toed shoes, etc.
Model values and behaviors the schools pillars, appropriate language, maintain
confidentiality (unless required to do otherwise), model the Golden Rule
Prepare for lessons, but be flexible includes having a back up plan, dont just wing it,
account for student differences and unexpected situations
o One of the Critical Dispositions from Standard 7 of the InTASC Standards is: The
teacher believes that plans must always be open to adjustment and revision based
on learner needs and changing circumstances.
With Faculty/Staff Members:
Be willing to provide feedback in a constructive and tangible way provide specific
examples
Work together to create a positive environment no gossiping (about students, families,
coworkers, staff, etc.), collaborate and share effective strategies/lesson plans
o The NEA Code of Ethics, Section II, number 7 states, the educator shall not
knowingly make false or malicious statements about a colleague. I think this
applies to every section of professionalism; as we talked about in class
discussions, teachers are never off the clock!
With Administration:
Respect! show up for meetings on time, use correct titles and last names (ex: Dr.
Cardenas), dont involve them in small issues
Be open to feedback take ownership and accountability, use it for personal and
professional development
With Parents/Community:
Attend events at the school, within the district, or out in the community sporting events,
fundraisers, festivals, volunteer opportunities, etc.
Open communication with parents about their childs performance phone calls (good or
bad), be aware of tone and attitude
Embrace diversity students genders, demographics, cultures, exceptionalities, etc. all
play a role in who they are individually and should be celebrated. The diversity of the
school community is so very important to understand.
o One of the Ten Professional Dispositions of Grand Canyon University is showing
respect for the diversity of others. Educators should be sensitive to individual
learning and the social needs of students and embrace the cultural diversity of the

community. They should develop and maintain educational communities marked

by respect for others.
I come from a family with backgrounds all across the spectrum, so I have always embraced
diversity. I was taught Spanish from a very young age and spoke both English and Spanish in my
house and coming from a military family, we were forced to move and travel frequently, but it
taught me a lot about the world outside of my small hometown. I feel that as a teacher, I will be
very passionate about my students backgrounds, as well as the cultures within the culture of the
school I teach in someday. I hope to encourage my students to celebrate who they are and
generate the same respect for their community.
Feedback, whether giving or receiving, is a challenge for most people. Although I have gotten a
lot better about receiving feedback, it isnt always the best thing to hear. I hope I can remember
to stay positive and use feedback as a stepping-stone for improvement, not as something to dwell
on, especially when it comes from my administrators.
