Name: Keylaisha Hudson Grade Level: 5th Content Area: Language Arts Standards Addressed: Title of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Kids.com Write me a Story Page URL of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: http://www.kidscom.com/create/write/write.html Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your classroom: In my class, the students will be preparing for the 5th grade writing assessment. This publishing opportunity would be great for prepping them for this assessment because it distributes random prompts complete with a setting that should be used and a character they must incorporate. This will be done every day for 1 week before the assessment during designated L.A. time for practice with creative writing. What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom? Desktop computer, laptop, or an ipad. Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.): a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their school: The site allows the users to submit their work using only their first name and country. The user is also able to view the work of others; this would show the students work from other students all over the world. b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): Students create their own creative stories however they choose to. c. Higher-order thinking: This would be creative high order thinking because the students are using little pieces of info and building and producing new, different stories it. d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: After one finishes their paper, they can submit it. Once submitted, the website allows other users to vote on the work they like to see who the best of the week is. This particular site is a LoTi level 2, exploration because it only supplements what is being taught. How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with your districts Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies? The site already only allows for the first name to be submitted which protects the childs privacy. It also has a built in ad blocker so there is no temptation for students to visit other sites. Id also be sure the computers have the website blockers and will patrol the classroom to ensure everyone is on task and not giving out too much info.
