TERM: 4 WEEK: 8
INTENTION: Students will be able to use the terms mean median and mode effectively and appropriately. Students will understand
processes required to calculate each term. Students will continue to grow in proficiency in recognising and calculating decimals, and
counting by halves. Students will be able to confidently choose an appropriate sample and take the average of this as a representation of
the population. Students will be able to identify the effect of outliers on the mean, median and mode.
VOCABULARY: mean, median, mode, range, average, sample, population, outliers

Task:
The school wants to find
out what the average
height of students is.
Without measuring every
child, how can the school
work this out?
Task:
Visit various classrooms
and measure for height,
using sampling method
decided mutually.
Task:
Using data from previous
lessons, calculate mean,
mode and median heights
from samples.
Challenge:
Second group measuring
students using a second
method of sampling.
Challenge:
Compare sampling
methods and averages.
Discussion around best
method.
