Proposal (Brochure)
1. Describe the genre you are going to write in.
For our genre, we are going to be designing and writing a brochure. A brochure is
a small booklet that shares information about a certain topic. Brochures are typically
one page folded in a certain way that you can open it up easily and find all the
information that you need in an organized manner. Our brochure will be visually
appealing and easy to read, yet very informative. Brochures can be found in many
places including, but not limited to, doctor offices, hotels, shopping centers, and many
other places where an individual may be seeking information about a topic. We are
going to be writing a brochure on why to attend North Dakota State University. We will
be persuading our audience and also informing them by stating what NDSU has to offer
them. We are hoping that this brochure provides individuals with enough information
about NDSU that will peak their interest and also influence you to attend NDSU.
2. Why do you want to write in this genre?
We want to write in this genre because it appeals to us by helping us express our
ideas about the campus and it is a genre we may be writing in later on in life. This genre
interests us because brochures are presented in a clear organized manner and that is a
style of writing that is exiting to us. Its something new but we could learn how to write
in this style. The genre sounded appealing because it usually contains pictures and
were all are more visually oriented people. Also using visual pieces could help us make
our brochure more effective to our audience. This is a different style of writing that we
are all not used to writing so we thought it would be fun to do something a little different
and expand our writing styles. This genre is an effective marketing tool, even though
none of us are marketing majors it will be fun to explore and see what we can do with all
our different majors. This would be a great genre for advertising and it will help us in our
professional careers. We all have different majors which could make the brochure more

different than if we all were marketing majors. Our goal is to help people understand the
good things that NDSU has to offer and make them want to go here. We are all students
here so we are the best people to be writing a brochure on why to come to NDSU.
3. How do authors use this genre?
Authors use this genre to give out information usually to large amounts of people.
Brochures typically have information about a certain product or topic. Information in a
brochure is educational, persuasive, and usually friendly. It is formatted in an easy way
to read and easy way that people can find the information fast. To help the readers find
the information fast it helps using bolded headers of what information you are going to
be talking about. Authors use this genre to give information to appeal to readers but not
an overwhelming amount. They use this genre to motivate readers to want to find out
more about the product or service that is presented. Using a visual on the front page will
maybe help catch the audience to make them want to read more. Authors use this
genre to present information in an exciting, visual way. They often use bullets to list
easy-to-read information as well. Using all these techniques will help the reader stay
focused on the topic and find the information they need faster.

4. What do readers (or viewers, listeners, users, etc.) expect from this genre?
Readers usually expect a lot of information from this genre. They expect specific
information from the topic/ product, for our case a topic. We are writing on why to come
to NDSU, our readers are expecting reasons to come. We have to provide them with
educational information but also what NDSU has to offer. Readers expect to find
information on several areas of a topic. They also expect some visuals so they can
better understand what is being presented and visually see it. Using opinions from other
students that go here would be very helpful. This would be helpful so they get more
opinions than just ours. The readers will expect enough information to persuade them to
want to find out more but not too much information, we don't want to overwhelm them
with information. Readers will also want the information to be easily found, we will have

to organize the brochure so it is easy to read and easy to find certain information. Our
audience will expect honest information and opinions directly from students who attend
NDSU. The readers will also expect to find contact information, such as phone numbers
or websites to inquire about more information.

5. Who is your texts audience?

The audience for the text would be those who are considering attending NDSU
who are graduating high school, looking for a college, or those considering switching
colleges. The secondary audience would be the parents that review the brochure for
their children who are considering attending this college. This audience will be seeking
information on why to attend NDSU and what it has to offer those who do. The audience
will be educated and excited to learn about college life.
Editors and school recruitment officials are our first audience. Then they
distribute them to students who are the main audience. The audience is mainly high
school students looking at colleges to attend and also college students that are looking
to transfer. The readers will be looking for a wide variety of reasons to come to NDSU.
There will be students interested in Greek life, and all the different majors. Also many of
the parents of these students will be reading the brochure. In addition to the interests
listened, parents may also be interested in the community and the cost. Also maybe the
parents of these students. They are seeking out more information on the college and a
brochure will help them learn more about it in a fun, easy to read way.

6. Genre audience objective:

The audience wants a brochure that has a lot of factual information on it and
information on why it would be a good idea to attend this campus. It is expected to be

visually stimulating while showing what the campus has to offer. The readers expect to
find short, easy to read paragraphs with a variety of information about the campus and
what it has to offer them. They expect specific information on different areas of the
campus such as academics, sports, campus clubs, and activities. The audience
objective is visually appealing, easy to read, informative, and exciting. A brochure will
appeal to high school students because they are attracted to visual information and they
want short, easy to follow text to make choosing their college less stressful and more
comforting.

7. How do you plan to establish the So-What Factor?

When our audience interacts with our text, they will remain engaged throughout
it. We will have short paragraphs with several visually appealing examples. We will have
graphics that are relevant to the text. Our readers wont have time to be disengaged
because we will move quickly through the brochure and keep it simple and interesting
with information that directly affects their decision and path in life. We will make sure the
information flows through the brochure. If one starts to feel the So-What-Factor it will
pass because they will move onto the next topic or area before they have time to feel
disengaged. We will keep the information relevant, exciting, appealing and educational.
We will use action verbs to keep the text exciting. The audience will mainly be high
school students so we are aware of that their focus level may be short. We will make
sure to make the text flow smoothly and quickly in order to avoid an overabundance of
information.

8. What is the style range for this genre?

Style range for this genre will include graphics as a visually appealing stimuli to
the audience. These graphics require complimenting color and dont want to be
distracting to the reader. The front page will be dedicated to an attractive design that will
entice the audience to first decide to look at the brochure. Each fold, except the last, will

be dedicated to a topic of why to attend NDSU and what we have to offer. The final fold
will be the contact information so that as they reach that last page and decide to attend,
the information will be easily accessible at their fingers.
High school students and their parents want factual informative information about
NDSU so there will be factual information that is relevant to the choices and questions
they will have about the college. They will also want a variety of colored pictures to be
able to better visualize the campus in a more persuasive way. Like we said in some of
the above sections, we plan to present the information in a formal to mid-level writing
format using short paragraphs with a variety of information that is slightly persuasive to
encourage students that we have the best campus and outlets to prospective students.
Our style range will also include current influential students comments so that our
audience can relate and connect to the information presented in the brochure through a
trustworthy source. The background of the brochure is also a very important stylistic
attribute, the background should be appealing but not distracting. The text that is written
over the background must be complementary in order to make the brochure enjoyable
to read and not have clashing color schemes.
9. What is the tone range for this genre (pathos)?
The tone range for our brochure will be informative and persuasive. It will be intelligent,
friendly, and inviting. We want to present the information about NDSU in a persuasive
way so our audience has a positive attitude while reading the text and looking at the
visual examples. We will include a variety of interests so that something will appeal to
the complex and diverse reader audience that will entice them want to find out more and
to attend NDSU. We want to encourage the reader to visit the campus and be optimistic
about it as well. We also want our audience to retain the information so we will use
limited text and the visuals. That way if the students attend NDSU, theyll be familiar
with some areas. We will use action verbs and bullets to make the tone exciting and
simple.
10. How is information constructed and conveyed in this genre (logos)?

Real life examples are informative and persuasive. Students can connect to the college
students experience and opinions better than just the facts, so we will incorporate
testimony of real students. We will also include current graphics to entice the readers to
want to view more of the campus. Using these student experiences, along with
information about the school, prospective students will enjoy the brochure and be able
to relate to it. We will use an enthusiastic and positive tone to persuade the reader to
come to NDSU and to discover more about the campus and what it has to offer. We will
cover some of the basics, such as tuition, cost, size, exc. but we will also give real life
examples of how current students enjoy the campus and the events that campus has.
We will give brief information about athletics, majors, and the community. This will be
factual and current.

11. How do authors appeal to credibility in this genre (ethos)?

The appeal to credibility will come through the fact that the authors are all NDSU
students. It will also come through the fact that we incorporate real student testimony
into the brochure. Other ethos examples could come through the knowledge supplied by
NDSU that is presented through the brochure. Visual representations will also appeal to
credibility through a visual aid that helps the audience better assess and receive the
information being presented to them. We also researched what makes a brochure
professional, appealing, and the format necessary for this genre. We will list some factual
information about academics, residential life, and tuition to make the brochure sound credible to
the reader.

12. How is outside information integrated in this genre? What citation style, if any,
would be appropriate for your text?
Outside information is integrated into this genre by incorporating real student testimony
on how they feel about the campus and its atmosphere. Other information that can be

incorporated into the brochure would be statistics and facts obtained through NDSU
whether it is the website, library, or admissions office. MLA citations are appropriate for
this genre, as there is not a lot of space to include long citations throughout the
brochure. We will use a variety of information to keep the text interesting and engaging
to the readers. We will use images from around campus and incorporate them into the
text to assist a readers visualization of a certain topic. We will talk to current students
and use their testimony in our brochure to relate and build on ethos to connect with the
audience. We will also use our own inside experiences as students at NDSU as sources
to relate to the audience. And we will also research information about the Fargo
community to include in our brochure. This will connect to the parents of the potential
students.

13. Where might your team publish its text (include medium)?
My team might publish its text to Office of Admission, who would use our brochure as a
more student-friendly way to give a tangible way to remember campus as well as
persuade those prospective students that NDSU is the campus they should choose in
their search. We could also submit the text to the marketing department at NDSU, who
would be able to better distribute the brochures to the target audience. We might use
our brochures at college fairs as a quick, exciting way to persuade future students to
visit our campus. We might also hand out the brochure to students at an informational
meetings at high schools. Our mediums would be print as a physical brochure and
possibly the NDSU website for those who would not be able to receive a brochure.
14. What is the minimum and maximum length of the genre? What length does
your text need to be?
Brochures can vary in length, both by section as well as the brochure as a whole
because of the many different types and purposes. It will be one page, folded in a trifold format. For this brochure, since it is meant to be informative there will be an
attractive and appealing cover fold. The inner folds of the brochure (except for the last

fold) will have a fold dedicated to each section of the persuasive and informative writing
we will be conveying to the audience so there will be anywhere from 1-3 paragraphs per
section as well as an image that is visually appealing and fitting to the topic. That means
that the whole brochure will have around 5-15 paragraphs of writing or bullets total,
since the quantity of writing is minimal the text must make up the fallacy in its quality.
The last page will be contact information so when the reader reaches the end of the
brochure they will have the information to contact us now that they have been
persuaded to come to NDSU.
