Life in Germany in 1936

to 1939
Evelyn Clinton
During 1936 to 1939, when Hitler was in power,
Germany had seen propaganda, the Hitler Youth, and
terror. Democracy was dead and the new Nazi regime was
called the Third Reich.
Many wealthier German people were happy. They could go to the parks, theaters,
and even theme parks. However, it was propaganda that controlled their lives. They all
started to like the Fascist Dictator, Adolf Hitler.
Hitler appointed Josef Goebbels as his Minister of Propaganda. Goebbels job was
to forge the idea of how great the Nazi Party was. He had to invent these ideas to create
a single minded nation so Hitler can expand his control, and fill his need for the perfect
race, the Aryan Race. Josef Goebbels was in charge of the media: newspapers, radio and
film. Newspaper that failed to commend the Nazi line were shut down. Any film that did
not applaud the Nazi beliefs were banned.
Adolf Hitler continued with his propaganda: to insure no man is left without a job
in ordinary families. The average wage was 10$ a week. This opportunity was great.
However, the workers werent aloud to give strikes or even ask for a raise. They were
stuck to slave in hot factories, where they would use resources to make military weapons
and vehicles.
The German households were even run The German households were even run
by propaganda. It was thought to be patriotic to wear long lasting clothing. Each
household would receive a certain amount of food. Saving any leftover food was given to
the German pigs. German people also had to give taxes every week to the Tax Collectors.
It was impossible for a young person growing up in Nazi Germany to avoid being
influenced by the Nazis. Hitler believed that 'the battle for the mind starts in the cradle'.
This means that from a young age children are taught to obey, respect and even worship
the Nazis. Youth movements were established as a way of indoctrinating young Germans
and make sure that they were loyal to Hitler.

At the age of 10, young boys joined the fungvolk, while girls joined the
fungmadelband. When a boy reaches the age of 14 he moves on to the Hitler Youth. It is
a great honour to be accepted into the Hitler Youth. They are given a dagger upon
entering, and it was inscribed with, Blood and Honour.
They did many army training drills. This included, going
on hikes with large stones filling their bags to make them
stronger. After school the boys went to the civil service.

When girls reach the age of 14, they join the

League of German Maidens. They were taught how to be
good future mothers. They learned how to cook, sew, and clean. The girls did this up to
the age of 18.
In Nazi Germany the boys and girls went to separate schools. A portrait of Hitler
was in every classroom. Their three main subjects were history, biology, and sports.
These had to be studied by all. Most teachers were members of the Nazi party and
taught their students about the Aryan Race. The ensured that the school textbooks
contained false facts about the weaker races. For example, they included a cartoon;
cartoons of rich Jewish people passing a poor German child, to show how evil the Jews
were.
The hatred of the Jews was a major thing for Hitler. After Hitler came to power
he passed the Nuremberg Laws for the protection of German blood and honour. After
this it became illegal for Germans to marry Jewish people. Jews were no longer allowed
to vote and had to wear the Star of David in
public so other could identify them. Terror
came to the Jewish people. They were
tormented and beaten. They had no respect
for them and their religion. Anyone that
stepped out of line, who broke any law,
quickly came to attention of the Gestapothe secret police. Even the Germans would
have been put to death.
