Title of Unit ___India_____
Intended Grade Level __6th_

Name __Hannah Pyatt__

Pre-Assessments to aid in Instructional planning

Discussion about the pictures in the introductory lesson will give me
an idea of how much the students know about the country.
Students will write something they know about India and place that on
the KWL bulletin board.
Students will write something on a card they would like to know about
India. This will help guide my instruction based on their interests.
During Instruction
Assess What?
(Objective)

Assess How/Using what tool?

Identifying
characteristics of the
Mughal Dynasty
Creating a timeline of
the historical events
that took place in
India.

Learning Stations

All

Teacher will use thumbs up/thumbs down

strategy for questioning all throughout the
unit.

Listen to the students skits they perform to see if

they are grasping some of the key characteristics of
the Mughal Dynasty.
Class will discuss some of the major events
students will be putting on their timeline. This will
be a time where teacher can assess how well they
understand what took place and if there is
something that needs to be re-taught before they
start their timelines.
Teacher will walk around and interact with students
at each station, making observations on how well
they are learning the material.
Teacher will check each students social studies
notebook at the end of the lesson or day

After Instruction
1) Informal Assessment Teacher and Students will refer to the KWL chart
on the bulletin board and have a discussion about some things they have
learned. During this, teacher will be able to assess how much each student
has learned and if they have comprehended everything.

2) Traditional/Formal Assessment Students will have a short, multiple

choice test covering, Mughal Dynasty, Indias fight for Independence, Indias
food and culture, Hinduism. It will also include a map for students to label
geographic landmarks we learned.
3) Authentic Assessment Students will do a presentation with a partner
over a topic from the unit they liked and have researched more thoroughly.
4) Portfolio Students will have a social studies notebook that they will
include their skit script, the historical timeline, the key to their map, the Venn
Diagrams, and the artifacts they did at the learning stations for the teacher
to assess at the end of the unit (and some each day).
Overall Evaluation of Lesson Unit I think a big part of assessing the unit will be deciding if students
enjoyed all the activities. The goal is for kids to be engaged in learning.
If my activities were engaging for the students, then it will be worth it
to use them again. If I noticed students getting bored with what we
were doing then it would be wise to come up with something new or
modify it to make it more interesting.
If students have no trouble thinking of something to put on the What
have I learned part of the KWL bulletin board then that will be a good
indicator they have learned a lot.
I will assess their Social studies notebook to see if they display learning
through their writing and projects they have done.
The formal assessment at the end of the unit will show me if they have
learned the specific facts/objectives I had for the unit.
Students presentations should display enthusiasm for their topic and
the things they have learned throughout the unit. If students have not
presented their information accurately, I may want to rethink how I
teach those topic next time.
