Essential Question: How can we investigate the structure and function of biomolecules and the role they play in
life?
Questions:

Notes:

What are the two parts of a

solution?
`

The two parts of the solution are the solute and the solvent.
When you put these two parts together it makes a solution.

What is the role of the

solvent? Solute

The solvent is what dissolves the solute.

The solute is what is dissolving into the solvent.
The solute usually ends up to be a chemical, compound, or element.

What is Basic?

Basic is the label for acid that has pH that is more than 7.
They usually have a bitter taste and are slippery
Basic adds OH (hydrogen) to a water solution plus it turns litmus paper blue
when added to it.
NaOH, LiOH
Ex: baking soda and soap

What is Acidic?

What is a hydrogen
bond?

Acidic is usually has a sour taste and feels sticky

Acidic has a low pH which is less than 7
Adds H+ to a water solution
Acidic turns litmus paper red unlike basic
Ex: HCI and HNO3
Lemons and vinegars
An hydrogen bond leads to surface tension
Surface tension is a property of bonding of hydrogen and oxygen
When bonding things the + and always have to touch
If a positive and a positive touch then it will not work, only opposite charges
can.

Summary: In a solution the two parts are the solvent and solute which are needed to make the solution. Solute
dissolves into the solvent and the solvent dissolves the solute. There are two labels for acid, basic and acidic.
Acidic have low pH which is less than 7 and basic have a high pH which is more than 7. Directly on 7 is called
neutral which is water.
