Lesson Plan Template ED3501GHI Curriculum Overview Lesson

Students would have arrived from gym. Work sheet will be
present on the white board. Supplies will be ready to go at the
back of each row.
Pre Assessment
What are the primary colours?
What are secondary colours?
What happens when you add black to a colour?

Discussion
What is chromatography? ( Separation of colours)
Today we are going to use this process on the colour
black.
Predict whether is going to separate of not.
Vote with your feet. If you think the color black will
separate into different colours go to the teachers desk.
If you dont go to the other side.
Have students return to their desks.
Hand out the first work sheet.

As a class fill out the prediction together.

Students will then receive
Coffee filter that has already been cut and has black
marker on it.
Eye dropper
Water for table

Demonstration

Show students how to use eye dropper and practice

Add one drop----- Wait

Another drop-------Wait
** make sure students arent soaking the area.
Once it starts to show colours, stop adding
water.
Assessment:
Filling out their work sheet (predicting).
Differentiation:
Teacher distributes water onto the paper.
Discussion
Did the dot change color?
Was our prediction right?
What are some colours you see?

Time

**Demonstrate how to fill out the rest of the work sheet.

Once the colour is done separating students can work on their
work sheet.
**While students are working on their work sheet prep for the
next part.
After students complete their work sheet
-Students will put their initial on the top.
- They will then be hung up to dry.
- Once they are dry they can be stapled to the students work
sheet.
As a class

As a class show what happens to other colours
Discussion
What happened to the colour black?
What colors did it separate into?
What do you think will happen to other colours?

1. Attach the strips of coffee filter to the popsicle stick with tape
( 2/ stick). Make sure they are the appropriate distance, so that
each strip fits into two different water glasses.
2. Colour a different line on each of the filters. About 1 mm from
the bottom.
3. Hang the strips into the water glasses. Add enough water, so
that the bottom is just touching.
4. Wait and see what happens. ** While waiting takes about 5
mins. Get students to make predictions.
Assessments/
Differentiation

Assessment of
Learning:

Transition:

A completed work sheet.

Students who are still working on their worksheet can continue
and see the end result.
Cliffhanger/Closure
Students have completed the work sheet.
They made a prediction of what may happen.
They identified what colors make up black.
Understand the word chromatography
Wont be teaching the next science lesson.
