INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE
Students will learn about one traditional food from each country. As a class, we will talk
about who has had any of the food we are discovering together and who would like to
try it. We will talk about how avocados are prepared in Mexico, tomatoes in Per, and
some typical fruits that are only found in Latin America that we don't have in the US. We
will talk about marketplaces and how they are mostly seen in the center of smaller
towns. We will also wrap up Culture week.

Direct Instruction: Teacher will guide students through lesson.
Do Now: Watch video on empanadas and the Boquera (marketplace) in Barcelona,
Spain.
Group Discussion: We will have a class discussion about what we have just watched
and also talk about different fruits that are foreign to the US. Students will then break up
into groups of four and be assigned a specific food from a Latin country.
Read Aloud: After doing some group online research, students will answer questions
on handout given by teacher and will present their findings to discuss with the class.

ADAPTATIONS
Students will be given a brief overview of each assigned food by the teacher
Video links will be provided to clips viewed in class
Extra time will be given to students who require it to exchange and research ideas

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
Level 1: Students will be given the country of origin of the food they were assigned and
will be asked to research the ingredients of the food. Students will be given a short twosentence review on the food and will answer questions on the handout that will display
some examples.
Level 2: Students will be given a hint about the country where the food they were
assigned is from and will research the rest of the information on handout which will
display one or two examples.
Level 3: Students will research their assigned food online and answer all questions on
handout to discuss with the class.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
1. Students will watch two videos: One about an empanada recipe from Argentina, and
one about a very popular marketplace in Barcelona, Spain.
2. Students will listen to a brief lecture from teacher about the topic being presented.
3. Students will break up into groups of four and be assigned a food to research as a
group.
4. Students will fill out the handout given out by the teacher and present it for
discussion to the class
5. Finally, students will discuss their findings with the class, leaving some time for a
general discussion and questions.

ASSESSMENT
Students will be assessed during their group discussions and be given a class
participation grade for their work.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Students will complete the QR Code Questionnaire posted on the class website for
homework due on Monday.

FOLLOW-UP: DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION

Students who did not complete the class assignment will have to complete the handout
given by the teacher during class at home and bring it in on Monday. They will not be
penalized for not being able to finish, but will have to make sure their work is handed in
by Monday along with the assigned homework.

FOLLOW-UP: ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

Students who met or exceeded expectations on all tasks will research Latin American
fruits that are foreign to us. They will be asked to list as many as they could and state
their country of origin.
