Reflection on Slavery: Then and now

Slavery is a major part of history of how America became America. Slavery is

still relevant because its affects have echoed through-out Americas history,
segregation, racism, miss treatment, and the inability to get proper education had
been going on until the 1960s which had ended with the help of Martin Luther King
Jr. MLk success stopped segregation, but racism, the miss treatment of AfricanAmericans, and the education standards for African-Americans is low, all resulting in
the unfairness which was slavery. The miss treatment of a race is still happening all
over the world, like Syrians wanting to leave their homes and defect to other
countries, and those countries natives turning their backs on them. This is also
happening within the United States as well, with issues with the boarders and how
to try and control it.
This brings me to how it relates to other classes. In music class, we wouldnt
have jazz or other heavily influenced music by African-Americans. In Economy class,
America wouldnt be the powerhouse it is today, due in part to how much profit
America made from slavery and the goods derived from it.
Nate Turner, his impact on the U.S. was huge; because of him laws were
made to make sure slaves knew not to get out of place like he did. Also because of
Nate Turner, slaves would be illiterate due to laws passed to make sure slaves
couldnt read to help prevent another rebellion as bad as Turners was. Across
Virginia and other southern states, state legislators passed new laws to control
slaves and free blacks. They prohibited education of slaves and free blacks,
restricted rights of assembly for free blacks, withdrew their right to bear arms (in
some states), voting, and required white ministers to be present at all black worship
services. (wiki, 2015)
The relevance slavery still has on today. Like what to do about manual labor
nobody wants to do. Who do we get? People, who want a better living, yet basically
work for nothing. Almost like indentured servants. The definition of indentured
servitude is: a person who is bonded or contracted to work for another for a
specified time, in exchange for learning a trade or for travel expenses
(Dictionnary.com, 2015) Thus if we dont step back and look at history and learn
from our mistakes we are doomed to repeat them, That is why we take history to
learn and grow from our past to make a better future. Just like how we grew from
slavery and understood how terrible it was and how greatly it affects the United
States as a whole.
