Naiomi Benns Philosophy of Education

My philosophy of education is to maintain a firm rigor and build a

positive rapport with the students. My philosophy comes from my
authentication of my passion and journey in life. Students are viewed
as empty vessels and I believe it is my responsibility to full them up
with knowledge that can be used for practical examination and college
readiness. In order to achieve academic confidence and success, it is
imperative every student understands the significance of their
education. I believe students should not settle for less than their best.
Direct instruction is the strategy that I use to teach my students the
fundamental skills across all content areas. Along with direct
instruction I will incorporate inquiry based learning and cooperative
learning. By implementing cooperative learning strategies students
have a chance to demonstrate and participate in academic and social
growth thus making students responsible for their learning and
development.
Peer pressure has an impact on most adolescents and this
method helps students learn to work with and learn from their peers.
Students should be intrinsically motivated and with the use of positive
reinforcement through interdependent group contingencies they are
expected to keep that motivation. Cooperative learning can increase
students reading skills by creating an atmosphere in which students
learn to work with their peers. I have a passion for teaching. I am

overjoyed to witness students learn, engage with the lesson, life, and
history. My heart routes me to the early adolescent age in junior high
school. This is the age where they are hitting puberty and finding
themselves. When I was in junior high school I was finding myself. I was
trying to figure out where I fit in life. I had my teachers to help and
guide me when my parents were not able to. It takes a village to raise
a child. I will always remember that. I want to be that authoritative
figure that would help make a difference in their lives. At this age they
are developing literacy skills. In this world it is significant to know how
to read, write, research, and have a proper discussion (intellectual
conversation) with others. As a teacher I do not just want to prepare
students for a state test. I want to prepare them on how to survive in
this world. I plan on starting by including critical thinking skills in my
lessons. Solomon Ortiz said, Education is the key to success in life and
teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students.
Ignorance is expensive. Students need to know how to read important
documents, write a persuasive email or even something as simply as
reading signs to know where they are going. John Dewey believed that
education effected individuals perception on life. The traditional
education is concerned with breath and not depth. Depth is better than
breath I rather go deep into the topic and understand students actual
experiences. I agree with Deweys philosophy because education is the
path to a better view and understanding of the world. It enables one to

find beauty and mystery and find see things from a broader
perspective.
I chose this philosophy because children need structure and need
to understand the severity of getting an education. Our founding
fathers fought for us to have an education and become something of
ourselves. I personally do not take that lightly because there was a
time in history where we were not entitled to education. Students
should expect me to encourage and teach them something they did
not know or build on their prior knowledge. Every child deserves an
education.
