Class Observation Form

Faculty Member Observed: Mr. Tei Brown Observer: Basma Abdulla

Class Observed: Foundations Level 3 Date and Time of Class: Wednesday, 24th September,
2014 12:30 13:20

1) The goal or outcome for this class session is:

a. Speaking practice on general conversation topics
2) Describe what happened in this class session. What was done by the faculty member
and/or the students? What teaching methods did you observe? How effective were these
activities and methods in achieving the goal or student outcome that the faculty member
had set out for this class session? Explain.
a. The teacher gave students instructions to only speak in English. The class was
divided into partners and they had to take turns asking answering questions.
b. The teacher reminded them of behavior when they are asking the questions, and
when they are answering the questions.
c. The teacher used students to model the proper way to ask and answer questions.
d. Students where then given the list of topics. Again the teacher asked them about
what they could or could not do, then they were asked to start.
e. The rest of the lesson was spent with the teacher going around to each group of
partners, listening to them and giving them advice and support on how to best ask
and answer questions.
f. Students were given rubrics to evaluate each others questioning and answering
techniques, and to add comments and tips to each other.
3) What worked particularly well during this class session?
a. The evaluation session I think it was very helpful that students were both
interviewers and interviewees, and that they were given the tools to assess each
other as if it was a real exam setting and they were the examiners. I think this
method will allow them to remember the important skills for longer.
b. There was partner work, and students were given their list of instructions and
directions verbally and in writing as well.
4) Was there a point during this class session when the faculty member lost student
attention
a. No, I feel like for the whole session students were focused and in charge of their
learning.
5) How did the physical surroundings or environment of the class session affect the learning
experience, if at all? (For example, the temperature or set up of the classroom, the time
of day, number of students in the class, outside noise, lighting, problems with equipment
or technology such as VCR, COW, etc.)

a. The class was already divided into partner desks, and students faced each other
throughout the whole lesson.
6) What suggestions do you have for the faculty member you observed in terms of
expansion of particularly effective teaching strategies, improvement of teaching strategies
that didnt work well, solving problems you observed, etc.?
a. Since this was a practice test I dont think I would be able to suggest anymore, but
maybe an additional activity I would have liked was to use a voice recording app
and have them record their interview so that I could pinpoint common mistakes
with the whole class and focus on that for the next lesson.
