Turtle Class

Newsletter
Friday 18th September 2015
Dear parents and carers,
Turtle class has had a really exciting start to the new school year; weve all
had fun sharing stories about our summer holidays and I have really enjoyed
getting to know the all the children. As you know, the theme for the classes
this year is endangered species, and Year 2 has been named Turtle class. A lot
of our work in class has focused on turtles so far, and it is a theme that will
continue throughout the year. I thought you might also like to hear about
what we have been doing this week:

In literacy we have been reading Little Turtle and the Song of the Sea to
support our class theme. The class has used the story to help them write
their own descriptions of turtles and they have also begun to create a story
board of Little Turtles journey to the sea.
In maths we have been focusing on the place value of ones and
tens. We have also predicted the placement of numbers on empty
number lines and begun to use number lines to help with addition.
In science we have been learning about habitats, particularly coral reefs. We have begun to
think about what makes a good habitat and why animals choose them. The children have
also been using world maps to locate and name the worlds continents and oceans to link
geography to our topic.
The class has also begun to create its own coral reef.
Everyone in the class has designed a topical fish and we
have also begun to make papier-mch turtles, so please
stop by for a look!
Kind regards,
Chris Hancock

Please remember that Year 2 has outdoor P.E. on Wednesday afternoon and indoor P.E. on
Thursday morning. This means that children should come to school wearing their tracksuit,
polo shirt and trainers on Wednesday morning. For P.E. on Thursday, the children have
their shorts and t-shirt in school already, so they should come to school in their uniform.

Homework
What do you think makes a good habitat? See if you can write a paragraph
about what a turtle might need in a good habitat. If you need some help, have
a look for information in a book or online.
Literacy

Heres a good website to start you off:

http://www.animalfactguide.com/animal-facts/green-turtle/

Can you find all the 2-digit numbers greater than 40 using these digits?

Maths

Also remember to practise your two and three times tables and counting in
tens from any number.

Things to
practise

Practise doing up your own buttons when you get dressed. It will help when
you get changed for P.E.
Try to tie your own shoe laces, too!
