Fire in the Sky

Fireworks, also called pyrotechnics, have been used as a form of

entertainment for centuries. The first firecrackers were made from
bamboo in China around 200 BCE. Later, between 600-900 CE, Chinese
chemists began experimenting with making firecrackers by putting
different types of chemicals into tubes. In 1292, Marco Polo introduced
fireworks to Italy. During the Renaissance, Italians began to make true
pyrotechnics. Word spread to other countries and fireworks became a
popular form of entertainment. By the 1700s in England, firework displays
became big public events. Today, firework displays may include between
40 and 50 thousand fireworks. They are operated by highly trained
professionals using computers.
