Parent permission was/was not obtained for this assessment (if you did not receive
parent permission, please explain the reasoning)
Student Information: (Write a few sentences about the child you used for your
assessment - keep this brief) Very active girl. She enjoys school. Had to tell her to be
still a few times and to stay in her chair. Very talkative and enjoyed the company.

Assessments Administered: (Just list the assessments you administered)

- Neuhaus Reading Comprehension Screening for the 2nd grade student
- Words Their Way Developmental Spelling Inventory

Student Observations: (write a few sentences about the behavior of your student during
the assessment understood/followed directions, worked cooperatively, had difficulty
sitting still, appeared distracted, etc.) Student worked cooperatively in a manner of
speaking. Attention span was very short. Like to move around a lot in her seat playing
with her arms and hands. She did follow directions until she got distracted by her self.

Assessment Results:
Neuhaus Reading Comprehension Screening:

be described by the scoring criteria; note student strengths and weaknesses do not

Decoding and fluency My dog Buster passage there was 2 errors that she made.
Had trouble with the words trouble, and the contraction doesnt. Completed the
reading in 3 minuets which exceeded the expected benchmark. While reading she
used her finger to follow the flow of the story and sentences. With the
longer/harder words she would break them down in to sounds. After putting the
word together she would then repeat the sentence and use the word(s) that she put

together. There were a few times she would get restless in her seat while reading
the story.
-

Retell rubric - She scored a 10/20 only met the bench mark in one area. She went
off on tangents of her own. Her family just got a new puppy over the weekend so
this story kind of triggered that though process which lead to being off topic.
With retelling she didnt really tell the story all in the correct order but did
manage to remember the important ideas of the story. Did a great job on sounding
out the words she didnt know and put them together by herself.

Oral Language Total was 15 items per minute. She did meet the benchmark.
With all the areas started off strong with naming things but had difficulty about
10-15 seconds afterwards. Sometimes repeating items that she had said before.
At the middle point she would start to get fidgety and would lose focus. Had to
tell her to try and think and stay on task multiple times. With the states she only
knew 3 of them.

Listening Comprehension Passage _____ did very well in this area, scored a
check in all the questions. She actually paid attention to me as a read the story
about trees. Though she still had difficulty sitting still. I had to stop and tell her
to sit still a couple of times. When it came to answering the questions she recalled
the information quite well. Could see her thinking about the information. She
would add a couple of her own answers that werent in the story but did name the
answers that were in the story.

Reading Comprehension/Metacognitive strategies passage Did really well in

this area as well. She however didnt look at the questions before reading the ant
story or ask about a meaning of any of the words. After every sentence or two she
would pause. She re-read a couple of the sentences after reading them the first
time. When she answered the questions she had to re-read the passage on a
couple of the questions but she did get all the questions correct.

Words Their Way Developmental Spelling Inventory (add whether you gave the
Elementary Level or Upper Elementary Level): Administered the Elementary Level
Inventory
(describe results be factual; note student strengths and weaknesses)

____ had difficulty with the spelling portion of this assessment. Only did the first 10
words on the list. She had good grasp on the beginning and ending letters in the words.
Did great with her short vowels but had difficulty with the long vowels. With the long
vowels she would usually leave out a vowel if it was a double vowel. She did fairly well
with the digraphs. Had difficulty with the wh left out the h with the word when.
Another strength I noticed was that there were no letters that were reversed. All letters
even with the misspelled words were written correctly and legible.
Summary:
(Summarize the results; do not put any new information here. Provide an overview of the
students strengths and weaknesses. Make sure if you list a weakness that you also
provide a recommendation for instruction for the student). Her strengths in this
assessment was when she was able to read and see the words. Had a good concept and
understanding with the hard words after she sounded them out. Keeping focus was her
biggest issue throughout the assessment. I think it would have been better if it was in a
more professional environment free of other distractions. I dont have a classroom to
make it more personal. The biggest weakness in the assessment would be the spelling
portion. I want to say that a couple of the words were probably my fault in how I
pronounced them. I tried to correct myself but that didnt seem to help after she got the
initial sounds in her head. With the long vowels I would recommend more activities and
practice with those types of words to get her more familiar with these types of words. I
would probably employ the use of Elkonin boxes as well as using blending techniques
with the more difficult words. Would definitely focus on the

Reflection
Write a reflection about your experience giving the Emergent Literacy Assessment. Make
sure to include aspects of the assessment that you feel went well as well as things you
might need to change or improve for the future.
I had a great time administering this assessment. Though ______ was very active and
lost focus easily she was fun to work with. The parts where she was able to read and see
the words she did really well in. Even when she had difficulty with the areas she was for
the most part able to do it herself. The spelling was her weak area but I think that would
be normal for early elementary. By the end of her 2nd grade year I think she will make
great progress in the areas she had difficulty with before. She does read books on her
own quite a bit and has books at home to read. With more practice and reading both on
her own and read a-louds with her parents she will start to recognize some of the harder
words. With these assessments I wish I had a more controlled environment. When they
are in their own houses and surroundings they easily get distracted and lose focus
quickly. I think picking a more structured environment would improve these results. In
the future I might record myself in a practice run on the giving instructions and saying the
words parts so that I might see if there are little mistakes that I am making and correct
them accordingly.
