1. Golden mean
The concept attributed to the Greek mathematician
Euclid that a small part relates to a larger part as the
larger part relates to the whole. It suggests the
moderation in all things or a place between two
extremes.

2. Fibonacci Series
A medieval mathematician, Leonardo Fibonacci
discovered a series of numbers that demonstrates the
increasing ratio of 1-1.6180 which adds together the
two previous numbers to arrive at each new number.
Scientists have discovered that the plotting of these
numbers on a horizontal and vertical axis creates the
spiral that occurs in nature.

The designer of mass apparel chooses the

4. Ideal fashion figure length
The comparison of the length of the bodice with the
length of the entire garment.

5. Proportion
The result of the comparative relationships of
distances, sizes, amounts, degrees or parts to the
whole.

7. Gestalt Principles
The ways in which visual information are understood
holistically before it is examined separately; also
called the Law of Simplicity; they explain different
approaches for the creation of unity.

The perceptual tendency to separate whole figures
from their backgrounds, based on such elements as

10. Grouping
Also called similarity; elements that share similar
characteristics are grouped together in the viewers
mind.

The edge of a composition or a boundary within
which it acts as a unifying force.
