What is Personality? Personality is all of the different tendencies and behaviors that make up a
person

Why is it so difficult to define? It is so difficult to define because no two people have the exact
same behaviors, thoughts, and motivations; everyone is different.

What are the 3 constant characteristics of human behavior? live in groups, groups have a
hierarchy, people form a system of beliefs to make sense of the world

What are the 3 main motives that human have? to get along with others, becoming successful,
and belonging somewhere

Group Dynamics
How did groups begin? Explain. When people followed the people who knew what they were
doing/ had the best skills and could help provide for them (the leaders)

Explain the difference between competition within groups and competition between groups.
Competition within groups is individual and competition between groups is a group effort

How do group dynamics lead to the development of leadership? The people in a groups
different characteristics generally determine who will become the leaders

What is the Great Man Theory? What characteristics do people of power and leadership have in
common

What is Power? And how does it relate to leadership? Power is the ability of one person to get
other people to do something they want to be done. It relates to leadership because people who
are leaders also have power

What impact did Freud have on the field of Psychology? Why? he popularized it by explaining
subconscious thought and the impact it has on personality and what drives people

What is Neurosis? (research if unknown) It is a relatively mild mental illness that is not caused
by organic disease

Identity vs. Reputation

What is the difference between Identity and Reputation? identity is our private self, invisible to
other people. Reputation is what other people think of you

How does both Identity and Reputation impact your career success? Identity affects what you
feel you are capable of, reputation affects what people feel you are able to do, if you are
reliable/ hardworking etc

How did military leadership assessment identify good leaders? created the five factor model

How were German military leadership assessments instituted in the United States? By taking
complex personality assessments

What is the Five Factor Model of Personality? the theory that there are 5 main factors that
assesses measuring traits, predicting outcomes

How can a bad leader impact an organization? (Chainsaw Al) Put people out of work (people in
one town lost 500 jobs) They can manipulate their way to the top, gain all power and then use
their power negatively

The Dark Side

What is a dark side? And when does it show up? overused strengths or our own fears. It shows
up once they get to the top and are not restraining themselves anymore.

The Bright Side

What is the bright side? And when does it show up? The aspects of our personality (strengths)
we present to the world and manage. It shows up when you are vulnerable and alone

A New Way to Think

Can people change their personality? You can put in place strategies to help manage certain
parts of your personality
