- Created a worksheet for students to use
- Created a Word Bank for the smartboard for students to reference
PROCEDURE
Introduction (_10_min.):

Teacher will listen to


students responses
when they discuss sight.

Attention Grabber: Ask students to raise their hands if they have ever heard of the 5 senses. Ask students if they can
name one sense (call on 5 students). Teacher will tell the student that she has a special teacher here to teach them
about the 5 senses- Dr. Bonics. Play the 5 senses video

Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Students have not yet been taught about the 5 senses, although they have
experienced them every day.
Connection to Curriculum: This lesson is connected to the five senses unit in grade one science.
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: Students will sit in desks and listen while teacher is talking. They will
raise their hand to answer any questions and only talk to their neighbour if necessary. When doing activity, students
are encouraged to talk to their friends if they need help before asking the teacher. They are also encouraged to look
at the Word Bank on the smartboard for help if necessary.
Transition to Body: Ask students to raise their hands if they think that they use their 5 senses every day. Which sense
do they like the best (Raise their hand, call on 2-3 students for answers)

Body of Lesson (15 mins)

Teacher should ask the students questions about the 5


senses:
Raise your hand if you know:
What sense we use when we eat an orange?
What sense we are using when its cold
outside?
What sense we are using when we watch a
movie?
What sense are we using when we smell
what is for dinner?
What sense are we using when we listen to
people?
Ask students to raise their hand if they know what holiday is
coming up soon
Students should raise hands. Pick one student to
give the answer (Christmas)
Teacher goes to next page on smartboard
Tell students that christmas is a very special time of year
The 5 senses are used all the time at christmas because of all
the exciting things that happen.

Teacher will then pull up the worksheet on the smartboard
Teacher will explain that the students will pick their very
favourite thing that they See, Touch, Smell, Taste, and hear
at Christmas
They will then draw them in the correct place and
write the word beside them
Teacher will point to each section on the smartboard
example and tell students which picture should be
where
Teacher will then take out completed example and show the
students
Teacher will then tell the students that she will put a big list
up on the smartboard for them to look at if they need help
with words (Switch to next slide)

Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Teacher will use the completed I know it is Christmas when I worksheet to
know that students understood each sense.
Feedback From Students: Teacher will formatively assess the students throughout the lesson to check whether or not
they are enjoying it. If students seem interested and engaged, they are enjoying it.
Feedback To Students: Thank students for their hard work on their names and tell them that they are going to keep
working on a new sense after lunch. Ask students what they think it might be.
Transition To Next Lesson: Explain to students that they will be working on the sense of Sight after lunch, so when
they go outside to play, they should look all around and SEE what kind of cool things there are.
Sponge Activity

If students are finished their I know it is Christmas when I worksheet, they can choose to
either begin colouring in their 5 senses workbook, or read quietly to themselves on the carpet.
