STRATEGY: Mastery
Subject Area: Mathematics - Multiplication Facts
Teacher Performance Expectation Addresses:
TPE 5 - Student Engagement: They ensure that students understand what they are to do during
instruction and monitor student progress toward academic goals.
TPE 11 - Social Environment: Allocate instructional time to maximize student achievement in
relation to state-adopted academic content standards for students, instructional goals and
scheduled academic tasks.
Common Core Standards:
Mathematics MP.4 Model with mathematics
ELA/Literacy W.I.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information form experiences
or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
ELA/Literacy RI.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Personnel:
Teacher
(Room Mom if needed)
Instructional Materials:
Stop Watch
Ample supply of photocopied Multiplication Masters tests (0s - 12s)
Multiplication Masters bulletin board materials
Rectangular foam board and gridded out sections using colored tape.
Attach bits of Velcro across the entire board, and label each grid section for multiples 0-12
Print each students name onto a card that has been laminated. Then place Velcro on the
back
Lesson Length:
5 minute Pre-Test
20 minute review
3 minute Post-Tests for each multiplication table 0-12
Preparation:
Prepare pre- and post-tests
make sure that a sufficient amount of copies have been made for all post-tests

Management Standards:
Normal class expectations apply
Anticipatory Set:
Behavioral Objective (Do):
Students will score 100% on each Multiplication Masters (multiples 0-12)
Students will also have to earn 100% on the test in the allotted 3 minutes for the test
Students will memorize multiplication facts 0-12
Transfer (Learning theory/citations):
After students have explored multiplication concepts with arrays, area models, pictorial
representations and other hands on experiences they are ready to begin to memorize
multiplication math facts
Memorization of multiplication math gives students a solid foundation in mathematics that will
help them solve simple or complicated problems throughout life.
Motivation (teacher created):
Explain the Multiplication Masters bulletin board displayed in the classroom. Twice a week,
students will that 3 minute multiplication fact tests to moves through each bracket of mastery.
Students will start with the 0s and move through each bracket on the bulletin board until they
pass their 12s. Each test must be pass at 100% and in the allotted 3 minutes. Once all
students pass the 12s test and are all considered Multiplication Masters the teach will provide
them with pizza for a lunch.
Pre-Test: (Multiplication facts test of 40 problems that includes a variety of problems from every
times table)
Give directions
Administer Test
Go over answers with students
Students who receive 100% of the pre-test will move onto a division mastery worksheet
Methodology:
Input
Go over the answers with the students - providing them with every solution to every
problem
Have students highlight or circle answers that they missed or problems that gave them
more trouble
Review options for solving problems that students found hard
Provide students with time saving test tips
Doing all the problems you know or think are easiest first

Guided Practice (Checking for understanding - group) Learning Tasks (Activities):

Hand out a blank copy of the pre-test that the students just took and graded, and have
students complete it with out a time constraint.
Students are encouraged to work with peers or visit the in class math facts learning center to
aid them in getting the correct answers.
Begin the memorization process as a class together
Remind students that they will all likely move through the post-tests at different paces. People
memorize things at different paces
Post-Test:
Twice a week set aside class to time administer tests to students.
Multiplication Masters chart will not only help the teacher keep track of students progress in
an organized manor, but it will keep students on track and in charge of their mastery
Collect and grade tests
Tell students that received 100% that they are allowed to move there name to the next
multiplication mastery level
Independent Practice (Monitor/adjust - individual) Productive Modalities:
Ask students to write down what they are having the most trouble with in their memorization, if
any. If they are not having any troubles request that they write down a trick that may help
peers
Closure:
Answer any questions that students may have
Assign homework assignments to students with multiplication facts for the particular fact they
are in order to help them study for their next Multiplication Masters test
Supplementary Activities (learning centers, manipulative, special activities, computers):
Gate: Have these students create a math fact portfolio that can be added to the classroom
math learning center for other students to reference
Challenged: Have these students practices with math fact flash cards before they take a timed
test (with a room mom, possibly)
Consider time constraint removal for post-tests
SDAIE: Try to create new associations by way a flash cards or pictures if needed. Remind
students of resources available in the class math learning center.
Consider time constraint removal for post-tests
Assessment:
Individual:

The Ocean
Mastery 100% on each post-test (0-12) in the 3 minute time allotment for the test
Students will go on to solve more complex multiplication problems and division problems
Remediation (less than 100% on post-test)
Students will repeat post-test and aligned homework practice sheets until they can pass
the post test at 100% in the time allowed
If time is the only issue for the student to pass, exceptions can be made
Points:
5 class participation points available upon completion Multiplication Masters chart (when
student has all multiples to 12 memorized)
