Learning Outcomes
(7.) Compare and measure the strength of
magnets.
Assessments
Observation.
How much of the work can they do on their
own?
How much help do they need?
Min: 20-25
Silent reading for 10-15 minutes (calms
them down after recess.)

1. Magnet strength work sheet. Have the
adult who is leading this station read the
students the sheet and fill in the blanks.
When finished they can do the magnet
vocabulary sheet.
2. Pulling power. Measuring magnet
strength with a ruler. Use a variety of
magnets and see how magnets vary in
strength. Record onto work sheet.
3. Pipe cleaner experiment. How many pipe
cleaners can a magnet pick up? Use 3
different hight of containers with pipe
cleaners in the bottom. Predict which
container you think will be best at picking up
the most paperclips. The short container,
medium, or tall, and why? Test it out after
making predictions and discussing them as
a group.
4. Paper clip experiment. Use 3 types of
magnets and count how many paperclips
they can pick up. Test each magnet out 3
times for validity. Record on worksheet.
Are they making thoughtful predictions? Are
they making connections from what weve
already learned? Are they noticing that
magnets have all different kinds of
strengths?

Consolidation/Assessment of Learning:
show lesson plan and talk about it
Min: 10
Discussion on factors that effect magnet
strength, cover 1 or 2 points for the last bit
of each class:
-Size
-Stored properly (room temperature, away
from electronics, not humid/wet
environment, keeping magnets that are
similar together (not mixing up different
kinds that are competing/constantly
working), its good to put cardboard between
them in storage.)
-Quality
-Shape
