II.6.9-11
Romeo and Juliet. One of the most famous love stories
ever told. Its the age-old, star-crossed lovers tale,
filled with passion, conflict, and loss. For me, Romeo
and Juliet is not only about romance and what it
means to feel like one would rather die than be
without the one he/she loves. Rather, it is also a
warning. It is a story about what happens when
individuals and/or groups of people disagree, and then
allow those disagreements and differing perspectives
to justify violence and the unfair treatment of others.
It is a reminder of the tragedy that can unfold when a
group or person feels superior over another, and then
treats that person(s) with disrespect. Most
importantly, it shows the level of tragedy required to
open peoples eyes and to stop a cycle of violence and
mistreatment. It is far too high. Instead of allowing our
differences to get the better of us and to destroy us, I
want people to feel confident celebrating their
differences. There is so much we can learn from each
other, and the world would be a lot duller if we all
thought the same or could be placed in the same
category. Besides, we really arent as different as we
think we are, anyway. Most of the labels we give
ourselves and each other in order to build unnecessary
walls of protection and isolation are incorrect or
irrelevant or in our own heads. We are all beautiful
people who shine in beautifully different ways. Juliet
had it right when she said:
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose, By any
other word would smell as sweet." Romeo and Juliet,
