OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF

STUDIES

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

ASSESSMENTS

GLO

Primary

Demonstrate knowledge of materials that

comprise Earths crust, and demonstrate
skill in classifying these materials.

The students will know and apply what the

characteristics of a fossil.

SLO

Secondary

Compare samples of various kinds of

rock, and identify similarities and
differences.
Given a description of the properties
of a particular rock or mineral, identify
a sample rock or mineral that matches
those properties. Properties that
students should be able to describe and
interpret include:
colour
lustre or shininess; e.g., shiny, dull,
glassy, metallic, earthy
texture; e.g., rough, smooth, uneven
hardness
crystal shape for minerals, or overall
pattern of rocks.
Describe and classify a group of rocks
and minerals, based upon the above
properties.

PROCEDURE
Introduction: 5 min
Hook/Attention Grabber: We are going to learn more about fossil today!
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: What are fossils? (guided questions)
Agenda: Slides, Finding Fossils in Western Canada & Labeling the six Ecozones, Slides
Transition to Body: Not needed

Body: 50 min
Learning Activity #1 Go through slides
Brief review on the difference between a body and a trace fossil, and how to tell if it is a fossil. Then, show students the
major dinosaur sites in the world, and how has different regions of the world shifted.
Learning Activity #2: Finding Fossils in Western Canada & Labeling the six Ecozones
Each student will get a booklet with a map of western Canada, and a map that contains the six natural regions in Alberta. On
the map, students will use a pencil to draw points on the places where fossils are found. Students will also label the six
natural regions with me as a class.
Learning Activity #3: Go through Slides
Talk about how badlands form, what is palaeontology, brief information on the Royal Tyrrell Museum, who is Tyrrell, as
well as go over rules for the virtual field trip tomorrow.

Closure: 5 min
Consolidation/ Assessment of Learning: See based on students answers if they understand what makes a fossil. If not a great
understanding will have to re-visit information in a potentially different way
Feedback from Students: Gave students the opportunity to ask questions
Feedback to Students: Answer any question they may have.
