It is not very uncommon to know someone with diabetes.

He may be a friend, a
relative, or somebody in the neighborhood. This is not surprising at all because
diabetes is a chronic disease that has the largest growth rate worldwide. The United
Nations, in 2006, actually passed a resolution recognising the disease as a global
major health crisis.
This UN declaration raised global awarenes on diabetes, prompting more experts to
conduct studies on the natural remedies for the disease. Surprising as it may sound,
some of the remedies for the disease can be found right at your home kitchen,
garden or the nearest local market.
Bittermelon
According to a study by the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, together with the
Materia Medica of Shanghai, bittermelon contains four bioactive compounds that
can increase the circulation of glucose in body tissues. The Director of Garvans
Diabetes and Obesity Program, Professor David James, explains that this is
particularly helpful for individuals inflicted with Diabetes 2 who are lacking insulin,
the body compound responsible for converting glucose into energy. The compounds
found in bittermelon activate the muscles AMPK. The role of AMPK is to regulate
how glucose trasporters move in the cell surface. This is an important process in the
glucose uptake so that glucose can circulate more efficiently in the tissues of the
body.
Flax Seed
Another effective natural remedy than can be found in the local grocery stores or
specialty health food stores are flax seeds. They are high in nutrition and low in
carbohydrates. Unlike a bittermelon that is quite challenging to eat because of its
taste, flax seeds have a naturally nutty taste. They can be made into bread, a
porridge and other food preparations that are pleasing to the taste buds. A study
conducted in May 2013 and published in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and
Pharmacology says the Linun usitassimum active fraction or LU6 component of the
flax seed increases the glucose utilization of the liver as it decreases the elevation
of blood sugar after meals.
Cinnamon
Who knew that one of the favorite spices of all time is actually one of the best home
cures for Type 2 diabetes? A study conducted on 543 individuals with Type 2
diabetes showed that those who took pills with cinnamon as the major component
for four to eighteen weeks exhibited lower levels of blood glucose and cholesterol.
Researchers believe the cinnamaldehyde in cinnamon catalyzes the release of
insulin and its effects.
