Thankyouforprovidinguswiththisopportunitytopresentasetofrecommendationsforimmediate
actiontoaddresscriticalissuesrelatedtothefutureofouruniversity.

Whiletherecentactsofhateseemsurprisingtothosewhomayidentifyaspartofmajoritypopulations,
marginalizedstudents,staffandfacultyatSantaClaraarenotsurprised.Theseactshaveadecadeslong
historyonourcampusandcontributetoanenvironmentcontrarytotheintentoutlinedinourmission
statement.

WhatweproposeisindirectalignmentwithourschoolsbeliefinConscience,Compassion,and
Competence.WestresstheurgencyofthisproposalbecausewebelievethattheseimprovementstoSanta
Clarasacademics,studentandresidentiallife,transparency,andrecruitmentprocesseswillfacilitatea
better,saferenvironmentforallstudentswhilebetteraligningourpracticeswiththebeliefsthisinstitution
wasfoundedupon.

Bynotstandinginsolidarityagainsthatredinallitsformsoraddressingtheseissuesina
consistent,intentionalandstructuredway,asalientportionofSantaClaraUniversitysmission
statementremainsunfulfilled.Thisrequiresboldleadershipthatiscourageousenoughtosetthe
standardforhighereducationinstitutionsacrossthenation.

Weseeourrecommendationsfrommultipleperspectives.Werecognizethattheserecommendations
requirededicationandfullsupportfrommembersofourcommunityhowever,wealsorecognizethat
diversityinallitsforms,aswellassafetyandapositivecampusclimatearecriticaltothemissionofour
University.Tothisend,weaskforyourimmediateattentiontothefollowingrecommendations,divided
upintofourcategories:Academics,StudentandResidenceLife,Transparency,andRecruitmentand
Orientation.

Academics
WeadvocateforarestructuringofourCoreCurriculuminawaythatbetteralignswiththevaluesare
committedtoasaUniversityandholdeverystudentaccountableforfulfilling.AtSantaClaraUniversity,
westrivetoeducatethewholeperson.Herearesomewayswecanimproveourefforts:

CORE:
Definition:
ReorganizetheCOREdiversityrequirementfromaoneclassrequirementtotwoseparate
requirements.
ThesetworequirementsmustbefulfilledthroughonecoursefromtheEthnicStudies
ProgramandonecoursefromtheWomensandGenderStudiesProgram.
Toaccommodatethisadditionalrequirement,reducethePathwayssequencebyoneclass.
Purpose:
SCUhasademonstratedcommitmenttodiversityandsocialjusticehowever,weare
currentlylackingonthiscommitment.
Someclasseswithinthediversityrequirementfailtoaddressintersectingforms
ofmarginalization,astheyexistonourcampus.
Noteveryoneisfullybenefittingfromtheintendedpurposeofthisrequirement.
Thisisreflectedintheinteractionsbetweenmarginalizedandnonmarginalized
groupsoncampus(hatespeech,yikyak,etc.).
Formanystudents,SCUisthefirsttimetheylearnabouttheinequalityofopportunity
andbecomeawareoftheirprivilege.Byexpandingthediversityrequirement,SCUis
abletoprovideafoundationforthesestudentstobetterunderstandmultipleformsof
privilegeandhowtheyaffectothersintheworldandspecificallywithinourcommunity.

FullMajors:
Definition:
WeadvocatetheformalcreationofEthnicStudiesandWomensandGenderStudies
Departmentswithstandalonemajorprograms.Currently,thesearetheonlytwomajors
oncampusthathavecompanionmajorstatus.
Purpose:
SantaClaraUniversitywasoneofthefirstWestCoastinstitutionstocreateanEthnic
StudiesProgram(1969)however,wearenowoneofthelasttoexpanditintoa
standalonemajor.
WehavealsofailedtoexpandtheWomensandGenderStudiesprogramintoa
standalonemajor,whichhasbeenestablishedsince1981.

Byfailingtoexpandthesetwomajorsintostandalonemajors,SCUissendingamessage
tostudents,faculty,andthecommunitycontrarytoourcommitmenttodiversityand
socialjustice.
WeunderstandtheproposedadjustmentoftheCoreCurriculumwarrantsanincreasein
teachingcapacityinbothprogramstomeettheincreaseddemandforclasses.This
demandnotonlynecessitateseachprogrambecomeadepartment,butitalsoalignswith
theUniversityslargercommitmenttohiringmorefacultyofcolorasakeypartofthe
2020plan.

DiverseFaculty:
Definition:
Weadvocateforanincreaseinhiringfacultyofcoloraspermanent,tenuretrackfaculty
throughtheInclusiveExcellenceinitiative.
10%offacultyhiredthroughtheInclusiveExcellentinitiativeshouldbeoffered
permanenttenuretrackpositions.
Asofnow,mostfacultyofcolorareintheCollegeofArtsandSciences.Wewouldlike
toseeanincreasedfocusonhiringfacultyofcolorintheothercollegesinadditiontothe
ArtsandSciences.
Purpose:
SCUhasaremarkablysmallproportionoffacultyandstaffofcolor.Ofparticular
concernisthepercentageofblackfacultyoncampus,whichamountedtoonly2.1%of
fulltimefacultyin2011.Thisremainedmoreorlessstagnantsince2011.
Inthelast8years,SCUhasestablishedtheInclusiveExcellenceinitiativeinanattempt
toincreasethediversityofourfaculty.However,thoughmanyfacultymembershave
beenhiredthroughthisprogram,fewhaveactuallybeenhiredaspermanent,tenuretrack
facultymembers.
Facultyofcolorhaveauniqueperspectivethatbenefitsdifferenttypesofstudentsin
differentways.Forstudentsfromlessdiversecommunities,havingfacultyofcolor
increasestheopportunitytolearnabouttheminorityexperienceinavarietyofcontexts.
Forminoritystudents,facultyofcolorcanserveasimportantrolemodelsandmentorsin
howtonavigatethelandscapeofhighereducation.

CulturesandIdeasEventRequirement:
Definition:
WeadvocateaddingamulticulturaleventrequirementonceaquartertoallC&Iclasses.
Thisrequirementwouldmandatestudentstoattendaneventthatamplifiesthevoicesof
marginalizedstudentsoncampus.
Examplesinclude:DifficultDialogues,MCCCultureShows,MarkkulaCenterfor
AppliedEthicssponsoredevents,etc.
TheOfficeofDiversityandInclusionwouldmaintainthelistofacceptableevents.
Purpose:

TheC&Icoursesareintended,butinsomewaysfail,toexposeSCUstudentstoavariety
ofculturalperspectiveswithaneyetowardtheirdevelopmentasglobalcitizensonand
offcampus.
Acampusengagementrequirementwouldaddtothecapacityofourstudentstoget
involvedwitheffortsthatencouragediversityandinclusiononcampus.
WerealizethatthetopicsforC&Iclassesvary.Inordertomaketheeventsmorerelevant
andeffective,studentorganizationssuchasSCCAP,MCC,RRC,etc.cancollaborate
withprofessorstocreateeventsthattouchonsomeofthetopicsdiscussedinclass.

EthicsPointReportingInformationonSyllabi:
Definition:
WeadvocateforallsyllabitocontaininformationontheEthicsPointanonymous
reportingprocessforbiasincidentsandacademicintegrityreports.
Purpose:
TheEthicsPointsystemcurrentlyallowsfortheanonymousreportingofclassroombias
andacademicintegrityincidents,butisn'twellunderstoodbystudents.Theadditionof
reportinginformationtosyllabiwouldallowtheUniversitytobetteraddressbias
incidentsaswellasacademicintegrityviolationsintheclassroom.

StudentandResidenceLife

Weadvocateforashiftofourcampusculturetobetterreflecttheidealsofthetheuniversity.We
advocateforSantaClaraUniversitytoimplementprogrammingbothmandatoryandvoluntarytoengage
studentsinmeaningfuldiscussionsandlearningexperiencesbothoncampusandoffcampusandbefore
andduringenrollment.

FocusonDiversity/SexualAssault/AlcoholinOnlinePreEnrollmentProgram:
Definition:
Reframetheonlinepreenrollmentorientation(formerlyAlcoholEduandHaven)to
includemorefocusonaspectsofoffcampusandoncampusbiasincidentsthatstudents
mayfacewhenenrolled.Theprogramshouldincludeinformationonhowstudentsshould
respondtotheseincidents.
Provideengagingandeducationalcontent,whichwillalignwitha4yeardialoguethat
startswiththepreenrollmentprogramandcontinuesonthroughsenioryear.
TheconversationsaretobecarriedoutthroughtheFirstandSecondyearsofcollegewith
PerspectivebasedconversationswithinResidentialLearningCommunities.
Ifthecurrentonlineprogramdoesnotcontainadiversitycomponent,weadvocatethat
theschoolworktocreateandimplementadiversitycomponent.
Purpose:

Thisprogrammingwillprovidestudentswithresourcesthatwillaidstudentswhenthey
arefacedwithabiasincidentonand/oroffcampus.
ThisprogramwillalsobegintheprocessofinstillingthevaluesoftheUniversitywithin
themindsofincomingstudents.

4YearDialogue:
Definition:
Implementsupplementaryprogramspartneringwithresidencehallsandoncampus
organizationstocontinuediscussionswithstudentsthroughouttheirfouryearsatSanta
ClaraUniversity.
BeginconversationswithCFsintheresidencehallsduringthewelcomingmeetingto
provideinitialexpectationsforSantaClaraUniversitystudents.Thisinitialmeetingwill
alsocreatespaceforstudentstoaskquestionsanddiscussthemesthatcameupforthem
duringthepreenrollmentprogram.
Discussionsareexpectedtocontinuethroughouttheyearandcanbemodeledoffof
existingPerspectivesTrainings.
Implementanadditionalonlineprogramforstudentstocompletebetweentheirjunior
andsenioryears.Thisprogramwillcontinuethediscussionondiversityandsexual
assaultwithstudents.Itwillalsoprovideaspaceforstudentevaluationsonhoweffective
theschoolhasbeeninaddressingissuesofalcohol,sexualassault,andbiasesincidents.
ThisvaluablefeedbackcanbeusedtohelptheUniversityrespondbettertoissues
studentsfaceoncampus.
Purpose:
Increasethenumberofconversationsoncampusaboutissuesthathavepreviouslybeen
silencedduetoourlackofdiscussionaroundtheissues.
Providestudentssafespacestotalkaboutdifficulttopics.
AsaUniversity,wecansetanexamplebyencouragingstudentstoengageintopicsthat
aredifficulttotalkabout.Thoughdifficult,werecognizetheirimportanceandgive
studentstheopportunitytoimprovetheskillsneededtodiscusssuchissues.Themore
discussion,thelesstabootheseissueswillseeminthefuture.

ContactwithOffCampusLife,Sororities,andFraternities:
Definition:
RecognizingthatSantaClarastudentsarestillaffectedbymanyissuesoncetheymove
offcampusorjoinGreekLife,weadvocatefortheabilityofoncampusresourcesto
connectwithandeducateoffcampusgroupsaboutavarietyoftopicsincluding,butnot
limitedto:culturalsensitivity,sexualassault,sexualeducation,alcoholabuse,etc.
Examplesofoncampusresourcesthatwouldbenefittheoffcampuscommunity:
PerspectivesCommittee,theWellnessCenter,theMulticulturalCenter,etc.
Purpose:
SexualassaultisaveryseriousissueonallcollegecampusesSCUisnotimmune.By
liftingthenocontactpolicy,resourcessuchastheWellnessCentercanreachoutto
organizationsresponsibleformajorityofthepartyculturetoconductworkshopsand

educationalpiecesthatbringawarenesstoimportantissuessuchassexualassault,alcohol
abuse,andSTDs.
Theoffcampuspopulationisgrowinglargereveryyear.Greeklifeinvolvementis
steadilyincreasingaswell.WhileoffcampusGreekLifeisonlyabout3040%ofthe
studentpopulation,itisaloud3040%.OffcampushousesandGreekLifeare
responsibleformajorityoftheoffcampussociallife,whichoftenincludesthemed
parties,someofwhichareraciallyorculturallyinsensitive.
Itisverydifficulttoeducatethatportionofthestudentpopulationwhenthereisadistinct
anddeliberatenocontactpolicybetweentheschoolandGreekorganizationsaswellas
norecordtotrackstudentswholiveoffcampus.Wearenotadvocatingforthe
reassociationofGreeklifeonthiscampus.Weare,however,advocatingforbetter
avenuesofconversationsthatbothholdsthosestudentsaccountableforinappropriate
behavioraswellasprovideopportunitiesfordialogueandeducation.
Wheninappropriateanddiscriminatorybehaviorgoesunpunishedattheseoffcampus
locations,itprovidesanunsafeenvironmentforstudentsofcolorandothermarginalized
groupsintheSCUcommunity.
WhentheUniversitydoesnottakeadefinitivestanceonissuesandpubliclydenounces
theactionsofitsstudents,itsendsamessagetothecommunitythattheUniversityisnot
committedtocreatingasafespaceorwillingtoprovidethesupportunderrepresented
groupsneedinordertofighteverydayoppression.

OffCampusStudentLifeOrientation:
Definition:
Thereareavarietyofhealthandsafetyreasonsthatsupportthedecisiontotrackonand
offcampusliving.Inadditiontothosereasons,itisintheUniversitysbestinterestto
havearecordofstudentslivingonandoffcampus.
Inadditiontotrackingstudenthousing,weadvocatefortheschooltocreatean
offcampusstudentlifeorientationthatprepsstudentsforlivingontheirown.Itshould
alsoincludeadiversityandsexualassaultcomponent.
Thisoffcampusorientationisexpectedtobecompletedbyallstudents.Failuretodoso
wouldresultinapotentialfineoraholdononesabilitytoregisterforclassesuntil
completed.
Purpose:
Byhavingasenseofwhereallenrolledstudentsarelivingatalltimes,itismucheasier
tocontacttheminemergenciesaswellasholdthemaccountableforinappropriate
behaviorperformedoffcampus.
Theorientationwillalsobetterpreparestudentsforsomeoftheadversitiestheymayface
offcampus.Itwillbringmoreawarenesstoissuesofsexualassault,alcoholsafety,and
diversityaswellasserveasanavenuetocontinuethe4yeardialogue.
Byeducatingstudentsandholdingthemtoexpectationsofacceptablebehavior,students
mayholdotherstudentsaccountableandthinktwiceabouttheirdecisionstothrow
offensiveparties,kickgayorlesbianpeopleoutoftheirparty,orexcludeminoritiesfrom
theirpartiesbecauseofassumptionsthattheydonotattendSCU.

PeerJudicialBoardExpansion
Definition:
Weadvocatefortheexpansionofthejudicialadvisoryboardtoincluderepresentatives
fromtheMCC,SCCAP,VPP,andtheRRC.
Purpose:
Thepeerjudicialboardisagreatwayforstudentstoholdotherstudentsaccountablefor
mistakestheymayhavemadewhilelearninghowtobearesponsibleadult.Sometimes
thesemistakesareintheformofhatespeech,biasactstowardsmarginalizedgroups,or
specificallyaffectcertainpopulationswithinthecommunity.
Byhavingarepresentativefromtherespectivestudentorganizations,thevoiceofthe
marginalizedwillbeadvocatedfor.Thiswillserveasalearningopportunityforthe
studentinquestion.Theywillbeabletobetterunderstandhowtheiractionsaffected
certaingroupsandtheirconsequenceswillbetailoredaccordingly.

Transparency

TheUniversityshouldcontinuetoworkwithandmaintainacloserelationshipwithstudent
groupsworkingtoincreasediversityandcreateamoreinclusivecampusculture.Wemustalsowork
towardstheexpansionofchannelsofcommunicationbetweenadministration,faculty,andstudentsinthe
wakeofavarietyofincidentsoncampus.

FollowUpMeetingswithUnity4:
Definition
WerequestaformalcommitmentoftheLeadershipCounciltomeetwithmembersof
Unity4twicequarterlyoverthe20152016academicyear.
Theseconversationswouldideallytakeplacebetweenthesamegroupofstudentsand
administratorscurrentlyinconversation.
Purpose
WewanttocontributeinatangiblemannertotheongoingefforttomakeSCUadiverse
andinclusiveplace,aswellastracktheadoptionandimplementationofour
recommendationsandproposechangesasneeded.

QuarterlyAdministrativeForums:
Definition
Weadvocatefortheestablishmentofquarterlyeveningforumsorganizedbythe
PresidentsofficewhereallstudentscandirectlysharetheirexperiencesatSCUwith
highrankingmembersoftheadministration.
Theseforumsshouldfollowatownhallformat,andadministrationfromevery
departmentshouldbepresenttoanswerquestionsandrespondtostudentconcerns.
Purpose

Theincreasedaccessibilityofadministrationwillstrengthenthetiesandrelationshipsthat
alreadyexistbetweenstudentsandtheadministration.
Theseforumswouldbringtogetherstudentsfrommanydifferentwalksoflifeand
providethemwithanopportunitytoengagewithadministratorsdirectly.
Theseforumswouldalsoprovideadministratorsanopportunitytobetterunderstandthe
desiresandneedsofthestudentbody.

OfficeofthePresidentMeetings:
Definition
WeadvocatefortheretobemorevoicesinthemeetingsheldbytheOfficeofthe
Presidentwiththeleadershipofavarietyoforganizationsoncampus.
ThesemeetingswouldincludetheleadersofASG,MCC,SCCAP,theViolence
PreventionProgram,andtheRainbowResourceCenter.
Purpose
ThemaintenanceofformallinesofcommunicationbetweentheOfficeofthePresident
andmanygroupsthatrepresentelementsofthestudentbody,particularlythegroups

fromASG.
WewouldlikeMCC,SCCAP,theViolencePreventionProgram,andtheRainbow
ResourceCentertohavetheoptiontoplaceamemberonthesecommitteesalongside
ASGrepresentativesiftheysochoose.
Purpose
Thiswouldhelptoempowertheorganizationsonourcampusthathaveademonstrated
commitmenttoempoweringthevoicesofmarginalizedgroups.
ThoughASGservesastheprimaryrepresentativeofstudentsoncampusin
administrativematters,itsstatusasademocraticallyelectedorganizationcanmake
representationofminoritygroupsoncampusmoredifficulttoachieve.
Thepresenceofstudentsfromeachoftheaboveorganizationswhenimportantdecisions
aremadewillhelpensurethatmarginalizedstudentsvoicesaretrulybeingconsideredin
thedecisionmakingprocess.

TransparentResponsestoIncidentsonCampus:
Definition
Whenrespondingtobiasincidentsoractsofviolenceoncampus,administrationshould
givetheUniversitycommunityasmuchspecificinformationabouttheincidentasis
legallypossible.

Correspondencededicatedtoexplaininganincidentoncampusneedstofocuson
communicatinginformationtothecommunityasefficientlyaspossiblesothatthereisno
opportunityforrumororfalseinformationaboutagivenincidenttopropagate.
Whenanincidentoncampusoccursthathasseriousimplicationsforstudentsofagiven
community,theUniversityshouldmakeaparticularefforttoreachouttomembersof
thatcommunitytodebriefanddiscussnextsteps.
Purpose
AllmembersoftheSCUcommunityhavearighttobekeptinformedtothebestofthe
Universitysabilitywhenincidentsoccuroncampusthatsignificantlyaffectour
experiencesatSCU.
ManymembersofthestudentbodyweredismayedanddisappointedintheUniversitys
responsetotwoeventsthisyearinparticular:theassaultinGrahamResidenceHalland
thepostingofanonymoushatespeechdirectedatblackstudentsonYikYak.
Intheformercircumstance,manystudentswereforcedtogatherinformation
aboutaviolentincidentthatoccurredoncampussecondhandbecauseofthe
reluctanceoftheuniversitytocommunicateopenly.Detailswerescarceand
rumorsspreadlikewildfires.
Inthelatterincident,whileadministrationsentoutanemailnotingthatabias
incidenthadtakenplace,themessagefailedtocommunicatewhatexactly
happenedandwhen.Ratherthanincreasingthetransparencyoftheinvestigation
process,thevaguenatureoftheemailincreasedthelikelihoodthatstudentswho
didntknowabouttheincidentalreadywouldremainconfused.
Inbothofthesecircumstances,misinformationandrumorservedtheneedsofour
studentbody,andespeciallythestudentsdirectlyaffectedbyeachincident,poorly.

WASCTransparency:
Definition
WeadvocateforincreasedaccessibilityandavailabilityofWASCaudits.
Fullreportsshouldbesharedwithstudents,parents,faculty,andstaffviatheSCU
website,emailupdates,andpostingsonsocialmedia.
Purpose
Webelievethatitisimportanttocelebrateoursuccessesandacknowledgeourfailingsas
aUniversitypublicly,inordertobetransparentandhonestwithallmembersoftheSCU
community.
WASCreportsarealreadyprovidedtomembersoftheadministrationitwouldbe
relativelyeasytoprovidethemtoUniversitystakeholdersaswell.

RecruitmentandOrientation

Finally,weadvocatefortheUniversitysworktoincreasetheproportionofstudentsfromtheAfrican
diasporaandstudentsfromlowincomefamiliesoncampus.Thiswilldiversifyourstudentbodyinline
withthe2020planaswellascontributetoourstudentbodysexposuretoadiversityofideasandlife
experiences.

RecruitaMoreDiverseStudentBody:
Definition:
WeadvocatethesteadyincreaseoftheBlack/AfricanAmericanpopulationoncampusto
6%by2020withaneyetowardsofincreasingtheproportionofblackstudentstoreflect
thenationsblackpopulationpercentageproportionatelywithinthenext10years.
Toachievethisgoal,aconsciouseffortmustbemadebytheAdmissionsOfficetorecruit
morestudentsofcolor,andespeciallyBlack/PanAfricanstudents.
TheAdmissionsOfficeshouldexpanditsrecruitingpooltoincludeschoolvisitsand
informationalsessionsatsocioeconomicallydiverseschoolsandschoolswithahigh
percentageofstudentsthatarerepresentativeoftheAfricanDiaspora.
WithfundingprovidedbytheUniversity,SCUBlackStudentUnion,Igwebuike,
canalsoconductschoolvisitsalongsidecounselorstoattractmorestudentsof
colortoSantaClara.
ProvidefundingfortravelexpensesforstudentsintheSADIE,APEX,andNOCHE
programstoincreasethelikelihoodofgettingthesestudentsoncampus.
Purpose:
AlthoughwehavesignificantnumbersofLatino/aandAsianstudentsoncampus,our
blackstudentpopulationisdisproportionatelysmallforoursize.
Bynothavingasignificantethniccommunitytoconnectwith,studentsofcoloroftenfeel
ostracizedoncampus.Majoritystudentsalsomissoutonthediversityofperspectives
thatadiversestudentbodyengenders.
ThelikelihoodofreceivingdonationsfromBlack/AfricanAmericanAlumniisheavily
basedononesexperienceduringtheirfouryearsoncampus.Feelingsofostracization
decreasethechancethatblackalumniwillgivebacktoacommunitythattheydidnot
feelwelcomedin.
AsseenbythesuccessratesfromeventslikePreviewDayandtheTrioProgram,getting
studentsoncampusincreasesthelikelihoodofthosestudentschoosingtoattendSanta
Clara.ManyofthestudentsinvitedtotheTrioProgramdonotlivelocally,butare
interestedinattending.Byprovidingfundingforstudentswhoshowfinancialneedto
attendSADIE,APEX,orNOCHE,theUniversitywillincreasethelikelihoodofthose
studentsofcolorcommittingtotheUniversity.

ImplementChangesinAdmissionsProfiles:
Definition:
Inordertoincreasetheblackstudentpopulationoncampus,weadvocateforachangein
thewayadmissionscounselorsreviewapplications.
ThoughSantaClarabasesmajorityoftheirdecisionsonmeritwhilestillconsideringthe
wholeperson,thefocusongradesandnumbershindersmanystudentsofcolorfrom

beingacceptedintotheUniversity.Severalstatisticsshowthatmarginalizedpopulations
donotconsistentlyhaveaccesstocollegeprepcourses,APclasses,orotheropportunities
thatmaketheirapplicationmorecompetitive.
Purpose:
Toaccountforthisinequality,weadvocateforadmissionscounselorstoconsider
communityservice,personalstatements,race,etc.moreheavilywhenlookingfor
studentswhohavedemonstratedacommitmenttoour3Csoutsideoftheclassroom.

IncreaseScholarships:

Thoughwehaveasignificantnumberofstudentsfromminoritygroupsoncampus,the
proportionofblackstudentsoncampusisstilldismallylowataround2%.Acommitment
torecruitingmoreblackstudentsgoeshandinhandwithcommitmentstoaffirmSCUs
supportofdiversityandinclusiononcampus.
Torecruitmorestudentsofcolor,itisnotenoughtopiquetheirinterestandconsider
theirapplication.Resourcesmustbeinvestedinthesepotentialstudentstoincreasetheir
likelihoodofcommittingtotheUniversity.
Studentsofcolorareoftendiscouragedfromapplyingtoprivateinstitutionsbecauseof
theexpensivepricetag.Byprovidingadditionalscholarshipsforthesestudents,the
Universityisexpressinginterestandcommitmenttofurtheringtheeducationofthese
students.

OrientationDiversityTraining:
Definition:
RequirePerspectivestrainingofallOrientationLeadersasaprerequisitetotheirfirst
orientationsession.
MakeconversationsondiversityatSCUafeatureoftheorientationexperience.
Engageincomingstudentsindiscussionsabouttheconsequencesofbiasbydiscussing
incidentsandexperiencesthathaveactuallyhappenedonourcampus.
Thesediscussionscouldtakeavarietyofformsandcouldbeaddedtoexisting
OrientationsessionssuchasCommunityValuesand/orCommunityConversations.
Purpose:
RequiringPerspectivesTraining,ledbytheOfficeforMulticulturalLearning,willaidthe
OrientationLeadersastheyhaveconversationsabouttheexperiencesofminoritygroups
oncampus,andcontributetocreatingawelcomingenvironmentforincomingstudentsof
color.

Engagingincomingstudentsinconversationsregardingdiversitysetsapositivetonefor
discussingissuesofdiversity,inclusion,andbiasoncampusoverthecourseoftheirSCU
experience.
Formanystudents,Orientationisthefirsttimetheywillbevisitingthecampus,engaging
withpeers,andmeetingfaculty/staff.ItisveryimportantforOrientationtobeagood
firstimpressionforstudentsofcolorasitwillsetthetonefortherestoftheirfouryears
atSCU.

Thisextensivelistaddressestheconcernsofavarietyofstudentsoncampuswhohavecontinuallyfelt
marginalizedbyotherstudentswithintheSCUcommunity.Unity4isrepresentativeofamuchlarger
populationoncampus.Weaskthatyou,asadministration,takeourlistofrecommendationsinto
