Argumentative Essay: Too Much Water Drowns the Miller

1. Introduction
Hook: As competition for the college entrance exam among students has become more heated,
not only private education institutions and academies have increased but also public education
has faced the needs to be improved and more intensified.
Thesis statement: I strongly believe that teachers should not assign too much homework for these
reasons; homework takes up a lot of time and, assigning too much homework can be really
inefficient.
2. Body I
Topic sentence: Homework takes up a lot of time.
Point 1: Students will hardly have time for any other activities if they are given too much homework
assignments.
Supporting detail: extracurricular activities, family time
Point 2: Students have the right to have some free time and spend it how they want to.
Supporting detail: Students also need time to play and relax to refresh and divert themselves. It's
also good for developing creativity
3. Body II
Topic sentence: It can be inefficient.
point 1: Students can either lose interest or push themselves to the point where they cannot get
enough sleep.
supporting detail: If students are constantly forced to spend too much time doing homework, they
could easily get distracted during school time. Likewise, if some students need more time to
accomplish their task than others and have to give up some of their sleeping hours, they might be
sleep deprived and it will be hard for them not to doze off and to focus in classes during the day.
point 2: Each student has other interests.
supporting detail: Some students want to be actors, musicians, sports players etc, and pursue
goals and dreams that do not necessarily require a lot of studying or require relatively less
studying. For these students, assigning too much homework will be almost pointless.
4. Body III
Counter-argument: People who insist that teachers do not assign too much homework and that
they should keep on assigning a lot of homework say that homework is a vital part of education in
that it helps students develop a habit of self-directed learning.

Refutation: If a task is forced upon students, it is very unlikely that they will enjoy doing it.
Supporting detail: The point of self-education is to get students to voluntarily, actively and
enthusiastically participate in learning and to be interested in it in the process. Moreover, it is to
help students take responsibilities in their own learning and education. This original purpose of
self-directed learning cannot be served by tremendous amount of schoolwork because it will rather
intimidate and overwhelm students and prevent them from taking sincere interest in learning.
5. Conclusion
In conclusion, there are many good reasons for teachers not to assign too much homework to
students. Homework takes up a lot of time. Another reason is that homework can be inefficient.
Therefore, assigning a lot of homework cannot be the way tohelp students develop a better
learning method such as self-directed learning. In my opinion, people who believe that the more
homework the better students learn, should come up with a better strategy to maximize the
efficiency in students' learning because students are the bright future and the best resource of
the society.
