paper on if saying Merry Christmas is disrespectful.
Prior learning What do students know? What can they do? What are they learning to
do? How will you make connections to prior learning?

- Knowledge of the pro and con list of saying merry Christmas and saying Happy
Holidays

Connections to personal/cultural/community assets How will you make connections to
your students strengths as a way to motivate students to engage in the learning activities
you have planned? (HOOKS)
The students are going to be writing about their own personal beliefs on the topic
and will pull in ideas they have formed, ideas from people around them, larger scale
ideas to help them in their argument.
Section C: Content/Procedures/Sequence (Include estimated time for each activity)

Content outline

Instructional strategies/learning tasks/sequence of

activities (include what you and the students will be doing
that supports diverse student needs)

Pre computer discussion (10)

Writing (40)

Explain the idea behind the paper: you are

writing this paper to persuade someone else to
agree with your opinion on how winter
holidays should be handled socially. This
means you are writing on whether you agree
with people saying Merry Christmas or if it
should be a more generic Happy Holidays.
You are pulling in your own opinions and
experiences as well as from interviews and the
debate we had. You can also use news sources
as long as you cite them and know they are
credible.
Go over the 3 parts of a paper: Introduction,
body paragraphs with a main idea in each one
where they address opposite opinions and
explain why that is not true, and a conclusion.
Explain that they must be focused on their
work and should not be talking about other
topics with students or looking on the Internet
on anything that does not relate to the topic.
Explain how this is a rough draft so it does not
have to be completely perfect because we will
revise it in class and I will also read over them
to give any helpful tools to strengthen their
papers.
Send the students off to the computers to
begin writing about their opinion while I walk
around to answer any questions, read over
anything they are unsure of, and so on.
I will keep students on track and stop them
from time to time to remind them where they
should be at that time
15 minutes in- introduction finished, started
on 1st body paragraph
25 minutes in- at least 1 body paragraph and
introduction done almost done with the 2nd
35 minutes in- done with introduction, 1st and
2nd body paragraph, working on 3rd
40 minutes in- done with introduction, 1st, 2nd
and 3rd body paragraphs finishing up
conclusion.

Section D: Closure
Summary of lesson How will you bring the lesson to a close? (One-two statements that
you will say at the end of the lesson)
These papers are your own opinions of how Merry Christmas should be handled,
you are trying to convince someone to believe in your stance in the best way you
possibly can. Imagine if you were writing this to the president or someone high up in
government and trying to explain how things should be done, it is your job to give
them a good argument.
Assignment What independent work will be assigned?
Continue to work on their paper and print it out for the next days class.
Section E: Self-Assessment and Reflection (To be completed only if and after you teach the
lesson)
1. Was the lesson successful? What DATA or EVIDENCE support your conclusions?

2. Based on your conclusion above about what your students know and are able to do
(individually and collectively), what next steps in instruction are you planning?
a. For the class as a whole:
b. For individuals with specific learning needs within the class
