Why electrical safety in Hospital?

Even small currents flowing

through the human body put
the patients life and health
at risk !

The availability of the power

supply must be maintained,
even under fault conditions!

Why Isolated Power System?

- Increased operational safety (Or availability)
Insulation fault

in Normal (TN) systems

During 1st fault, a fault current flows determined by

the insulation fault.
IF<IK Fuse does not trip Risk of equipment malfunctions
No alarm
IF >IK Fuse trips Unexpected interruption of
operation
Insulation fault
In the event of first insulation fault RF
only a very low current ICe flows
Fuse does not trip
No interruption of operation
Alarm indicated by an Insulation
Monitoring Device (IMD)

Why Isolated Power System?

- Low leakage currents
Leakage current

in Normal (TN) systems

In TN systems (with broken earth conductor)

A high fault current can flow
The fault current is only limited by the body
impedance

Leakage current
In IT systems (with broken earth conductor)
The IT system is a small local network with low
leakage capacitances.
The fault current is limited by the body impedance,
the earthing resistance and the high impedance of
the fault loop.
Hazards to persons and equipment arising from
high fault currents are reduced.
