Hot Measurement
Always in demand requested
Delay blocks made of heat-resistant
materials have therefore already been
available for a long time. Placed on the
front face of conventional straight-beam
probes, they enable tests on hot materials
(g. 1). At temperatures over about 100 C,
the delay block can only be coupled to
the hot surface for a short period of time
and must subsequently cool down, as
the temperature of the probe itself must
not exceed approx. 60 C. This might be
acceptable for thickness measurements,
but it sets considerable limits to aw
detection. The short coupling period
does not allow any echo peaking.

Now eld-orientated
In cooperation with the German Federal
Institute of Material Testing (BAM), anglebeam and T/R probes resistant to continuous
heating to 250 C have now been developed
(g. 2). It is not until the temperature
rises above 250 C that the probe will have
to cool down after measurement. The maximum permissible contact temperature of
angle-beam probes is approx. 350 C, as
there is a risk of decomposition of the de-

lay material at higher temperatures. On the

other hand, the delay material of T/R probes
is resistant to max. contact temperatures of
approx. 800 C. Different couplants are available, depending on the temperature range:
ZGT up to 250 C, and ZGM up to 550 C. At
temperatures over 550 C, measurements are
possible by means of glass powder. The special
design of these probes also enables measurements at low temperatures up to -197 C.
