Lesson Overview
Day 1: Students will read the book The Pout Pout Fish aloud with Ms. B. Afterward, Ms. B
and students will discuss the range of emotions the Pout Pout Fish used and how he
expressed these emotions with his face, particularly his mouth. The class will discuss
emotions they have felt including how they feel today. Next, the students will watch a
demonstration of how to create their own fish using a paper plate, glue, scissors, and
watercolor paint. Depending on timing, Ms. B may show them the finished product and only
the first few steps. At the very least, students will be shown how to use watercolors,
watercolor brushes, and how to mix warm and cool colors. Ms. B will direct students to put
their name, grade level, and teachers name on the back of their plate by the end of class.

Day 2: Teacher will demonstrate cutting an expression with scissors and cutting and
attaching fins. Teacher will show various examples of options- smiles, frowns, etc. as well
as shapes of fins. Students will cut expressive mouths on their fish and attach fins and

googly eyes. If all students finish early, teacher will read The Pout Pout Fish again with
students.

Day 3: Students will finish their fish if they havent already and turn them in. Once they
have finished, students will be directed to an additional activity of the teachers choosing at
their table.
