I happened to see the Channel 7 TV program “Hooray for
Hollywooo" tondsht with the segment on BLADE RUNNLK. (well, to
be aenest, z dign't happen to seo it; someone tipped mu off that
BLADE RUNNGR Wes going to be a part of the show, and to be sure
to Watch.) Jeff, after looking --and especially after listening
to Harrison Pord discuss the film—— 1 came to the conclusion that
this indeed is not science fiction; it 4s not funtesy; it is
exactly what Harrisoh said: futurism. The impect of BLA!
RUNNER is simply goiny to be overwhelming, both cn the public
and on creative people -- and, 1 believe, on science fiction
as _a field. since I have neen writing and selling science fiction
WOEkE For thirty yours, this is a matter of some importance to mes
ain all canger 1 must say that our field has graduslly und steauily
been deteriorating for the last fow years. iWotniny that we have
gone, iidividuell, or collectively, matches ALADr. RUNNER, This
is not escapism; it is super realism, so gritty and detailed and
suthentic and goddam convincing that, well, after the segment 1
found my normal presenteday "reality" pellia by comperlson. hat
Iam Saying 45 that all of you collectively may have Created a
unique new form of graphic, artistic expression, never before
seen. ‘nd, I think, ALADE RUNNER is yoing toe revolutivnice our
conceptions of what science fiction is and, more, can be.
Let me sum it up this way. Science fiction nas slowly
and ineluctably settled into a monotonous veath: it has become
inbred, derivative, stale. cuddenly you people have coma dn,
some of the greatest talents currently in existence, und now we
have a new life, a new start. As for my own role in tne BLADE
RUNNER project, 1 can only say that I did not know that a work
