3 NEPHI 12 –
THAT WHICH WAS TAUGHT BEFORE IN GALILEE -
THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT
WHY ARE THOSE WHO BELIEVE WITHOUT THE NECESSITY OF SIGHT EVEN "MORE
BLESSED" THAN THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN AND BELIEVED?
THE BEATITUDES
3 Yea, blessed are the POOR IN SPIRIT WHO COME UNTO ME, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
[Poor in Spirit = recognition, as cited in the book of Job (Job 32:8) “there is a spirit in man:
and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” AND further recognition that
we are poor in spirit and understanding, wishing to become stronger in spirit. Hence, coming
unto Christ who can make us stronger in Spirit. D&C 84:46
And the Spirit giveth light to every man that cometh into the world; and the Spirit
enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit.
4 And again, blessed are all THEY THAT MOURN, for they shall be comforted.
They that mourn = mourning or sorrowing for weakness and sin
5 And blessed are THE MEEK, for they shall inherit the earth.
The meek = The Greek word used here, “prautes” cannot be translated perfectly into
English. The English “Meek” carries, in its definition, a weakness of character, which is not
found in the Greek original. It means submissive to God without complaint in all that He
places upon an individual in teaching, in commandment, or in experience. Mosiah 3:19 For the
natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and
ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and
becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child,
submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord
seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father
6 And blessed are all THEY WHO DO HUNGER AND THIRST AFTER
RIGHTEOUSNESS, for they shall be FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST.
Hungering and thirsting after righteousness implies diligently searching for truth. D&C
88:63 Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you; seek me diligently and ye shall find
me; ask, and ye shall receive; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
Moroni 7:19 Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light
of Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and
condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ.

3 NEPHI 12-15
The promise is that the Holy Ghost will be given to those who fulfill these beatitudes. They will
then, no longer be poor in spirit but rich in Spirit.
7 And blessed are THE MERCIFUL, for they shall obtain mercy.
Matthew 9: 13 But go ye and learn what [that] meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice:
for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Matthew 12: 7 But if ye had known what [this] meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice,
ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
The verse which the Savior referred to above is Hosea 6:6 For I desired mercy, and not
sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. The Hebrew word translated
“mercy” in this verse is chesed. This is a covenant word, referring to the highest form of
covenant relationship, especially between an individual who abundantly blessed and another
who is less fortunate. This includes a merciful relationship but is much more. As with the
Greek word “prautes” quoted above, this word cannot be perfectly translated into English.
8 And blessed are all THE PURE IN HEART, for they shall see God.
Pure in heart = a person who is pure in heart has no guile or corruption in thought or
behavior. Psalms 24: 4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his
soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.
Proverbs 20: 9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
D&C 41:11 And this because his heart is pure before me, for he is like unto Nathanael of old,
in whom there is no guile.
D&C 56:18 But blessed are the poor who are pure in heart, whose hearts are broken, and
whose spirits are contrite, for they shall see the kingdom of God coming in power and great
glory unto their deliverance; for the fatness of the earth shall be theirs.
9 And blessed are all THE PEACEMAKERS, for they shall be called the children of God.
Isaiah 52:7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings,
that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith
unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!
1 Nephi 13: 37 And blessed are they who shall seek to bring forth my Zion at that day, for
they shall have the gift and the power of the Holy Ghost; and if they endure unto the end they
shall be lifted up at the last day, and shall be saved in the everlasting kingdom of the Lamb;
and whoso shall publish peace, yea, tidings of great joy, how beautiful upon the mountains
shall they be.
Unlike that which is going on in Jerusalem today, the word “shalom” is a greeting of peace.
Those who would establish Zion in the latter-days must be peacemakers. Such peacemakers
will have the power of the Holy Ghost in their ministry.
10 And blessed are all THEY WHO ARE PERSECUTED for my name’s sake, for theirs is
the kingdom of heaven.
11 And blessed are ye WHEN MEN SHALL REVILE YOU and persecute, and shall say all
manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake;
12 For ye shall have great joy and be exceedingly glad, for great shall be your reward in
heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you.
D&C 101: 35 And all they who suffer persecution for my name, and endure in faith, though
they are called to lay down their lives for my sake yet shall they partake of all this glory.
Mark 13:13 And ye shall be hated of all [men] for my name's sake: but he that shall endure
unto the end, the same shall be saved.
13 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you TO BE THE SALT OF THE EARTH; but if
the salt shall lose its savor wherewith shall the earth be salted? The salt shall be
thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you TO BE THE LIGHT OF THIS PEOPLE. A
city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.
15 Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a candlestick,
and it giveth light to all that are in the house;
16 Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your
good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

3 NEPHI 12-15
The Lord did not review and modify every commandment, law, statute and judgment of the
Law of Moses. He rather, gave illustrative laws etc. expecting us to apply the higher
principles, thus illustrated, to the other aspects of the Law . In comparison, the Lord did not
consider, in the Word of Wisdom, every substance used by man as to its beneficial or
destructive characteristics; but expects us to use wisdom with all substances not
specifically mentioned.
34 But verily, verily, I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by heaven, for it is God’s
throne;
35 Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool;
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair black or
white;
37 But let your communication be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; for whatsoever cometh of
more than these is evil.
LEVITICUS 19:12 And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt
thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.
38 And behold, it is written, AN EYE FOR AN EYE, and a tooth for a tooth;
EXODUS 21:23 And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life,
24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
39 But I say unto you, that YE SHALL NOT RESIST EVIL, but whosoever shall smite thee
on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also;
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law and take away thy coat, let him have thy
cloak also;
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn thou not
away.
43 And behold it is written also, that thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine
enemy;
44 But behold I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to
them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you and persecute you;
Judaism, in contrast, doesa not demand that one love one's enemies - though it is completely
untrue to claim as Matthew does that Judaism commands one to hate his enemies" Prager
and Telushkin, 8 QUESTIONS, The Ulmad Press, p. 80

ALMS
1 Verily, verily, I say that I would that ye should DO ALMS unto the
poor; but take heed that ye do not your alms before men to be seen of them;
otherwise ye have no reward of your Father who is in heaven.
2 Therefore, when ye shall do your alms do not sound a trumpet before you, as will
hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men.
Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.
3 But when thou doest alms let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth;
4 That thine alms may be in secret; and thy Father who seeth in secret, himself shall
reward thee openly.
PRAYER
5 And WHEN THOU PRAYEST thou shalt not do as the hypocrites, for they love to pray,
standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of
men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door,
pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward
thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen, for they think that they
shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them, for your Father knoweth what things ye have need
of before ye ask him.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy
name.
10 Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
12 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
13 For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
FORGIVENESS
14 For, if ye forgive men their trespasses your heavenly Father will also forgive you;
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses neither will your Father forgive your
trespasses.
FASTING
16 Moreover, WHEN YE FAST be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance, for they
disfigure their faces that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they
have their reward.
17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face;
18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father, who is in secret; and thy
Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
PRIORITIES
19 Lay not up for yourselves TREASURES UPON EARTH, where moth and rust doth
corrupt, and thieves break through and steal;
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures IN HEAVEN, where neither moth nor rust doth
corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 The LIGHT OF THE BODY is the eye; if, therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole
body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If, therefore, the
light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

3 NEPHI 12-15
24 No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other,
or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve GOD AND
MAMMON.
JUDGING PEOPLE
[3] 3 NEPHI 14:1-5; PAGE 435
1 And now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words he turned
again to the multitude, and did open his mouth unto them again, saying: Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete,
it shall be measured to you again.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the
beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother: Let me pull the mote out of thine eye—and
behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see
clearly to cast the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
JUDGING GOD
9 Or what man is there of you, who, if his son ask bread, will give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

3 NEPHI 12-15
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more
shall your Father who is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
3 NEPHI 15:
CORRECTING A MISUNDERSTANDING CONCERNING LAW
1 And now it came to pass that when Jesus had ended these sayings he cast his eyes
round about on the multitude, and said unto them: Behold, ye have heard the things
which I taught before I ascended to my Father; therefore, whoso remembereth these
sayings of mine and doeth them, him will I raise up at the last day.
2 And it came to pass that when Jesus had said these words he perceived that there
were some among them who marveled, and wondered what he would
concerning the law of Moses; for they understood not the saying that old
things had passed away, and that all things had become new.
3 And he said unto them: Marvel not that I said unto you that old things had passed
away, and that all things had become new.
4 Behold, I say unto you that the law is fulfilled that was given unto Moses.

3 NEPHI 12-15
3 Nephi 9:18 I am the light and the life of the world. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning
and the end.
19 And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood; yea, your sacrifices
and your burnt offerings shall be done away, for I will accept none of your sacrifices and your
burnt offerings.
20 And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite
spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I
baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost,
Moroni 8:8 Listen to the words of Christ, your Redeemer, your Lord and your
God. Behold, I came into the world not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance;
the whole need no physician, but they that are sick; wherefore, little children are
whole, for they are not capable of committing sin; wherefore the curse of Adam is taken
from them in me, that it hath no power over them; and
the law of circumcision is done away in me.

1 And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto
Nephi, and to those who had been called, (now the number of them who had
been called, and received power and authority to baptize, was twelve) and
behold, he stretched forth his hand unto the multitude, and cried unto them,
saying: Blessed are ye if ye shall give heed unto the words of these twelve
1 whom I have chosen from among you to minister unto you, and to be your
servants; and unto them I have given power that they may baptize you with
water; and after that ye are baptized with water, behold, I will baptize you
with fire and with the Holy Ghost; therefore blessed are ye if ye shall believe
in me and be baptized, after that ye have seen me and know that I am.
2 And again, more blessed are they who shall believe in your words because
that ye shall testify that ye have seen me, and that ye know that I am. Yea,
blessed are they who shall believe in your words, and come down into the
depths of humility and be baptized, for they shall be visited with fire and
with the Holy Ghost, and shall receive a remission of their sins.

19 And behold, I have given you the LAW and the COMMANDMENTS of my
Father, that ye shall believe in me, and that ye shall repent of your sins, and
come unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Behold, ye have
THE COMMANDMENTS before you, and THE LAW IS FULFILLED.
20 Therefore come unto me and be ye saved; for verily I say unto you, that
except ye shall keep MY COMMANDMENTS, WHICH I HAVE COMMANDED
YOU AT THIS TIME, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

4 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat
upon that house; and it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them not shall
be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand—
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat
upon that house; and it fell, and great was the fall of it.
