UNIT:IV JOINT IN STRUCTURAL MEMBERS

Joint For Different Structural Connections

Dimensions & Detailing
Design Of Expansion Joint

JONIT FOR DIFFERENTIAL CONNECTION

Connection details:
In precast concrete construction the connection b/w the elements are of
supreme importance.There are two types of connections;
Wet connection (Mortar & in-situ)
Dry connections (Welding & bolting)
While choosing a connection so many factors we have to consider. The
connection should be in economical,Aesthetical respect the following
consideration shall be taken as;
Structural requirement
Tolerance
Aesthetical
Mode of erection
Check&adjust
Finishing
Manufacure
Transpotation
Cost

DESIGNING THE CONNECTION

While designing the connection following points must be
considered(by laws).

Loading under working condition

Stability of structure

Load conditions during construction

Effects of shrinkage

Creep and temprature

Unequal settlement

TYPE OF CONNECTION

Column -Column

Beam Beam

Main beam Secondary beam

Advantages:
To transmit large moments.
Provide good accessibility for proper welding.
Provide good accessibility to erect the beam.
Technical economic & Aesthetical aspect.
Fastest possible erection.
Good corrosion production.
No need of maintenance.
Maintenance cost nil.

DIMENSIONS AND DETAILING

Important as design since proper detailing of the engineering design.
Planning and engineering process as some of the most devasting
collapse have been caused by defective connections and detailing.
Detailing is very important not only for the proper explanation of
the structures but for the safety of the structures.

JOINT FOR CONCRETE

Will contract slightly during the curing process.
Primary cause of small surface cracks that appear during the curing
process.
Concrete will expand due to temperature.
Any concrete structure that is going to require numerous movement
joints is best designed by civil engg.
Spacing:
100 mm thick slab
From every joint 100 mm+30mm = 3.0 mm
150 mm thick slab = 4.5m
Types of joint:
Expansion joint
Contraction joint
Crack control joint
Construction joint

EXPANSION JOINT

Expansion And Contraction of a concrete slab dameging by forces.

Expansion joints are usually a complete gap between adjacent bays.

Materials for joints:

Flexible board (Cheap & readily avail in pre-cut of required depth &
creat expansion 12,20,25 mm tk)

Dowels (400 600 mm long,20 32 and Steel Grade 250)

Sealants (Hot poured bitumen seal, polysulphide mix)
