Part II. Understanding Main Ideas and New Terms


10. Many terms in science have Latin or Greek word parts. On the back of the first page
you can find many of the commonly used word parts. What does cytology mean?
11. The Word Origins section of the Appendix is a larger listing of root words. Go to
page 1047 and list the meaning for the two root words in chromosome.
12. Each chapter starts with a page called the READING TOOLBOX. It contains a variety of tools that will help you better
understand the content of the chapter. Use the Toolbox for Chapter 21 to answer the next three questions.
a. Look at the Using Word section and tell what a pseudopod helps an organism do.
b. Answer question 1 of the Using Language section.
c. Which organizer is recommended in the Using Graphic Organizers section.
13. Key Ideas and Key Terms are list at the beginning of each section. How many Key
Ideas and Key Terms are listed for Section 2 of Chapter 12?
14. When a Key Term is presented, it appears in boldfaced type. A new term is usually
defined in the sentence in which it appears boldfaced. Turn to page 224. Which of
the boldfaced terms on this page is defined as a structure made of a histone core and
the DNA around it?

15. When a Key Idea is explained within a section it is presented in a different font that is boldfaced, and begins with the > symbol.
What is the answer to the first Key Idea listed for Section 3 of Chapter 12?

16. Another feature found at the beginning of each section is the Why It Matters statement. This gives at least one reason why the
section may interest you. List the first sentence for the Why It Matters for Section 1 of Chapter 6?

17. When reading a section you will periodically encounter a > Reading Check. These questions give you an opportunity to verify
that you understood what you just read. What is the answer to the >Reading Check on page 84?

18. Quick Labs appear within most sections of this book. These short labs can be easily
completed during a class period and are categorized as Inquiry, Hands-On, or Data.

19. The Laboratory at the end of each chapter provides a hands-on lab experience in

22. The chapter Summary appears at the end of each chapter and lists Key Ideas and
Key Terms for each section. Listed after the Key Terms is the page within the
chapter where that term is defined. Go to the Chapter 20 Summary. On which page
can you find information about conjugation?
23. At the end of each chapter of your text you will find the Chapter Review. It is
divided into many types of review questions. How many questions does the
Interpreting Graphics part of the Chapter 32 Review have?

Part IV. Extending Your Understanding of Biology


24. Throughout the book, Interact Online markers located on many illustrations. They
indicate that an animated, interactive version of the diagram is available online. What
