newborn baby, making us feel like we have something
to offer, giving us a chance to love him. Emmanuel, God
with us. God who receives the first round of human
adoration from a very young unwed mother, an alongfor-the-ride father who secured a stable as a reasonable
place to stay the night, and a rag tag bunch of shepherds
and curious kings.
God must know how hard it is to receive help from
someone who has all the answers, who has the whole
thing figured out. The world does not value vulnerability,
yet, the most valuable gift we Christians ever receive is
offered to us at Christmas, wrapped in swaddling clothes
and total tenderness, lying in a manger, vulnerable.
Until now, the version of Jesus that has resonated most
with me is the teaching, healing Jesus. That grown up
Jesus was fantastic! He knew just what to say and how
to say it. He accomplished great things, and made a
difference in the lives of all who he encountered. Baby
Jesus had a far different approach in how he connected
with people: coos, cries and cuddles coincide with his
humble entrance to the world. Maybe he let himself need
us so that we could let down our guard and trust in being
able to need him.
One of the biggest gifts I have received this year is
a new understanding of what it means to need (and
receive) help. I would certainly rather offer help to
someone else than admit to needing it myselfbut Baby
Jesus is teaching me how powerful it is to let myself
receive help and care. Each time I have let down my
guard and admitted a need this year, there has been a
friend, church member or family member at the ready.
What a gift to have such a caring community of support
and encouragement, and what a gift it is to get to know
Jesus better! It is my hope that this Christmas, we are all
drawn a little nearer to Christ.

Being 30 weeks pregnant

on the week of Christmas
has been quite an interesting
experience. For me and
Stephen, the entire path
to parenthood has been
circuitous and challenging.
It took us a long to time to get
pregnant, and then it took
quite a while longer to stay
pregnant. Now that we're in
the third trimester, we have
gotten plenty of advice
and warnings!from many
people in our lives. Apparently, being a parent is not for
the faint of heart, and it will change you forever. Okay,
we got it, we think. We are bracing ourselves with the
understanding that we don't even fully comprehend
exactly what it is we are bracing for.
So many times this season I have found myself thinking
of Mary and Joseph. What a marvelous, mysterious
thing it must've been to be front and center to a miracle!
I've been mesmerized by Mary's Magnificat, her faithfilled song of openness, amazement and joy to being
chosen to give birth to Jesus! I imagine, though, that
there were days when Mary felt a little less than joyful.
Maybe these were the days where her feet were swollen
and her back hurt. Maybe she worried that she hadn't felt
that baby move much that afternoon. Maybe there were
moments she felt bothered that her body was a little too
round to quickly accomplish tasks that had previously
been routine, and she felt annoyed to have to slow down.
I can imagine that there were days where Mary felt a
little needy, kind of like I do.
I don't like the days where I feel needy. It's no fun to
be vulnerableto have to ask for help and support; to
admit to not being able to do it all or have it all together.
God must understand that frustration. After all, God
chose to show up on earth with us as a tiny, helpless

Religion, politics, and money. Three things youre never supposed to discuss in
polite company. But what if youre a pastor? Forget red state/blue state divisions,
what happens when your church members disagree about politics? In this age of
prosperity preaching, how do you preach, You cannot serve God and money?
Clay Stauffer addresses the challenges that preachers face when serving a politically
diverse congregation in Preaching Politics.
Money, materialism, and their effects on modern-day faith and spirituality are
viewed through the teachings of Jesus, as well as the works of Methodist pastor

Leadership Nominations Being Accepted Through January 31st, 2016

For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are
