Learning Module Title / Topic

Adult Learners
Student Development Theory
The Student in Higher Education

Name of First Module Completed: Adult Learners

Summary/Reflection: The different theories regarding adult learners (Andragogy)
was very interesting to learn about. I knew that adult learners were a little different
but not to the extent the theories points out. It was nice to see how the theories
progressed over time. Most adult learners have a lot more roles to juggle such as
children, full-time jobs, and other roles.
1) Need to know, set goals, 2) Self-concept, already have self direction (ownership
of how to learn), 3) Experience (may have biases) learning needs to be based on life
experiences might need to unlearn, 4) Readiness to learn, relevant of knowledge
learning (direction and support) 5) Orientation to Learning (life centered, needs to
be contextualized and need to have experiences incorporated), 6) Motivation to
learn (intrinsic).

Name of Second Module Completed:

The Student in Higher Education

Summary/Reflection: Younger students entering college have all had different

experiences that greatly affected them as they were growing up. Beloit College put
out a Mindset list and do so each year showing how the incoming freshmen view life
and learning. Most students now have always had cell phones and media to keep
them entertained or connected with their friends. They like lots of learning to take
place through media and have difficulty reading textbooks or taking notes in a
lecture hall.
This module also contained the UNO fact book regarding current undergraduate,
graduate degrees, faculty ratios, service learning, gender and ethnicity of students.
It was interesting to view the fact book regarding UNOs programs, service learning

projects, and grants. I hadnt really thought about this information a whole lot. I
tend to focus only on the classes that I am teaching or the ones that I was taking.
