Cautions for Load Running 1) Confirmation of engine performance Confirm and take down a record of the following items for more than once daily, (and also execute an adjustment as required) (1), Measure the explosion pressure (max) [Dispersion among cylinders should be less than 0.5 MPa (5 kgf/cm)] Indicator Exhaust Valve Fig. 4-22 Indicator (Sampling) Valve Pmax measuring procedure is as follows: @ Take a measurement when the load is steady, Note: Wear a pair of gloves for measuring the indicator because it becomes hot. @ Lightly blow the indicator (sampling) valve once, @ attach the indicator, and close the exhaust valve of the indicator. @ Be sure to open indicator (sampling) valve fully, and close them completely when the indicated pressure becomes highest. © After reading of Pmax, open the exhaust valve of the indicator, and detach it when the indication becomes 0 MPa (0 kgf/cm’). (2) Measure the exhaust temperature, (|t should be within an extent of the corresponding value recorded in a shop trial prior to delivery of engine.) Pmax and exhaust temperature Pmax and exhaust temperature vary according to various conditions, but they show the follow- ing tendencies. Thus, take these into consideration, check the existence or absence of abnormality. @ Relation between Pmax and boost air temperature. ‘As the room temperature rises, Pmax drops; as the room temperature drops conversely, Pmax rises. Thus, Pmax and room temperature are inversely related to each others, and for a change in room temperature by 3 °C , Pmax shows a tendenoy of inverse change by 0.1 MPa (1 kaf/om) Relation between room temperature and exhaust temperature. The exhaust temperature changes at the rate of about twice the room temperature change. How- ever, fouling of turbocharger and suction & exhaust lines, exhaust pressure, kind of fuel oil used, etc. as well as fouling of hull and propeller and so forth in the case of a marine main engine might exert some influences on this relation; thus itis no necessarily true that changes mentioned so far take place. In any case, it is necessary to operate the engine with its servicing and load reduction so, that the engine can be used within the following limits: Note |: Ifthe rack scale of fuel injection pump and Pmax are uniform among cylinders even if the exhaust temperature at each cylinder outlet is not uniform, it is unnecessary to correct compulsorily a lack of uniformity in exhaust temperature over cylinders. 2009.2.25R 413 4, OPERATION (Routine Operation) YANMAR N330 Note? : If the dispersion of the exhaust temperature among individual cylinder outlet is more than 40°C and the exhaust temperature at individual cylinder outlet has dropped more than 40 °C of the mean exhaust temperature at each cylinder outlet, immediately stop the engine, investigate the cause of problem and repair the engine avoid misfiring which is often the cause of wrong influence on the torsional vibration. Even if above mentioned dispersion is more than 40°C and the mean exhaust temperature at each cylinder outlet is within the limits of #40°C , would you stop and repair the engine suitably because of unbalance for the engine combustion performance. 2) Measure the combustion pressure (Pmax) again. The element is made from the polyester resin yam woven in the state of candle, which is the cave. A lot of elements are installed columnar in the filter housing, The lubricating ol passes through from the inside to the outside in each element, and is filtered. The layer of dirt which has built up on the inside of element are thrown into the oil pan through the hole of the Flushing Canal that meets to the hole of the element once every ten seconds. The Flushing Canal rotates, and so the backwashing filtration is done continuously while running the engine, The Flushing arm is driven by the turbine wheel that is driven with the flow energy of lubricating oil that flows into the filter. The high speed of the turbine wheel is reduced by the worm gear unit and gear to the lower speed required for tuming the Flushing Canal, The rotation of the Flushing Canal is a speed that decelerates the rotation of the turbine wheel to 1/200 or less with a worm gear, and makes one rotation every ten seconds. ‘As shown in the above-mentioned, the maintenance of this fiter is very easy. 19 4, OPERATION (Routine Operation) YANMAR N330 Fig. 4-31 a7 0 1 7 5 oN s : 3 Holle > 4 rN g No. [Por Name No. | PartName 1 Cover 7 O-Ring 2_| Fashing am 3 | Taine wing 3 Gear 9 Pinion Gear 4 | Cover Pato 70 | Fushing Ar Shat 5 | Fitor Element 7_[_ Pressure Oerent Contact ieaior 3 | Gear Unit 4)-2-2-2. CAI stands for Calculation Garbon Aromaticity Index, which shows an ignitability index. The index, in consideration of the relation between aromatic compound content in fuel oll and the ignitabilty is used to obtain the aromaticity degree in relation with the fuel oil properties. The larger the CCAI value, the larger the firing delay for inferior ignitabiliy. (2) Use the water having the properties shown n the following table.i Ls Do not use hard water, pH 208K (25°C) 63~80 If hard water is used, scale adheres to water chambers such as cylinder head and Recommended Water Quality Total hardness (CaCOs) << 100 ppm cylinder water jackets and may cause an Chiorine ion (CH concentration | <100 ppm overheat, Pay your particular attention to this regard M alkalinity 30 ~ 100 ppm ‘Ammonium ion (NH4*) cone. <0.05 ppm Sulfate ion (SO4") concentration |< 100 ppm Evaporated residue < 400 ppm 5-3-2 Selection of and Control on Corrosion Inhibitor (1) Add a corrosion inhibitor to cooling fresh water because use of fresh water causes a drop in strength of parts and the cooling effect through corrosion of water chamber and adhering of scale. (2) Select a corrosion inhibitor which does not have an adverse effect on parts of the cooling water sys- tem because parts made of cast iron, carbon steel, brass and bronze, are used in the cooling water system of an engine. Ls + In the case where aluminum materials are used in the cooling water system, consult the supplier of corrosion inhibitor because a kind of corrosion inhibitor to be used differs in this case. + As to the adding quantity of and concentration control on corrosion inhibitor and addition and han- dling of supplementary adjuster, obey the criteria set by the supplier of corrosion inhibitor. + In the case where the concentration of corrosion inhibitor could not be controlled, annually change the cooling water by the total volume. CAUTION @ Do not dump cooling water to which the corrosion inhibitor was added directly to the ocean or river. Since the method of treating the waste liquor has been provided for in the law, such liquid has to be treated according to instructions given by the supplier of corrosion inhibitor. @® Do not mix different brands of corrosion inhibitor. (In the case where mixing of different brands of corrosion inhibitor is unavoidable, consult the suppliers of corrosion inhibitor. ® A corrosion inhibitor is chemical for industrial water treatment use; do not use it in the drinking water line. @ When handling, wear rubber gloves and gauze mask to avoid direct contact with hands or other parts of the body. © Ifthe chemical accidentally comes in contact with skin, eyes or mouth, wash out thoroughly with fresh water. If the problem persists, consult a doctor. 510 5. FUEL OIL, LUB. PERIODICAL CHECKING To use the engine always in good order, checking is necessary periodically for trouble prevention. The period of checking cannot be fixed indiscriminately because it is influenced by application of the engine, conditions of use, quality of fuel oil lube oil used, and daily handling circumstance. Nevertheless, standard checking periods according to the classification of fuel oil used are given in the following table for your ten- tative criteria. With reference made to these checking tables, set up a checking schedule appropriate for your own engine, Ls + The following tables of checking show the standard checking frequency. Perform the initial overhaul servicing according to these checking tables. Then, based on the obtained checking (on wear corro- sion, accumulation of carbon, accumulation of sludge and others), make the most economical check- ing schedule for your engine, and conform to the specified schedule from the second checking + As for the items whose checking frequency is shown by both the accumulated operation hours and number of days, schedule the checking at the earlier timing, 6-1. PERIODICAL CHECKING yanMan N330 Memo o-14 7, DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & MAINTENANCE SERVICING YANMAR N330 7. DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & MAINTENANCE SERVICING Z)\cAUTION Unless you have the full knowiedge of engine internal structure at the time of engine overhaul and set about disassembling only after studying sequence wel, there is the possibilty that you carry out wasteful work to no purpose at all, that you damage parts once in a while or that you are lost in the proper sequence of reassembly Directions for Disassembling & Reassembling Works 1) At the time of disassembly, carry out work with thought given to reassembling sequence. 2) Do not force anything in disassembly or reassembly. (In the case where a hammer or the like is used, be sure to use also the appropriate cushion piece.) 3) When disassembling the joining area, chock for presence of set marks, and it is suggested to stamp set marks, if found necessary. By the way, there are several spots stamped with set marks at the time of manufacture. However, these set marks can not serve as reference points indefinitely because the wear of clamping seat, a stretch of bolt, etc. take place while the engine is being operated. 4) Pay your attention not to lose parts. It is suggested to arrange the detached parts orderly in a box pre- pared in advance or at a prearranged place. Besides, pay your special attention to bolts and nuts of the same size as there are some that differ in material for use at such as a high heat par~ for instance, and If wrong ones are used in reassembly, they become difficult to take out at the next servicing time. 5) When tuning the engine with motor during disassembly or reassembly for reasons of your work, pay your special attention to those areas that come into action by such turning, Unless you execute work upon fully confirming that there are no parts coming into contact with the said areas or that no part of your body is coming into contact with them, you might damage parts or might be wounded. (Refer back to Subsection 4-1.) 6) As for various heavy parts, set about your work with use of proper disassembling tool, safe wire rope, ete, 7) At the time of disassembly, remove the rust from the interior of cooling water pipe system by use of such as wire brush, for instance. For those pipes of which thickness has been lessened or that have been corroded extensively, repair them or have replacement parts arranged ready by time of reassem- by. 8) In the case of seawater cooled equipment (lub. oil cooler, air cooler and fresh water cooler), there are ‘many cases of scale adhered to the internal wall of cooling water jacket. Thus, remove the scale com- pletely by use of such as scale removing agent. 9) Execute disassembly while paying attention to see whether various parts of engine, bolts and nuts in particular, that are not seen during an engine run are loose or not, and at the time of reassembly, incorporate them with measures taken to prevent their looseness, 10) Because each packing is supposed to be replaced with the new one every disassembling time, have replacement packing arranged in agreement with the extent of disassembly. 11) When detaching a glycerin-filed pressure gauge from the engine, be sure to place it with the rubber cap faced up. 7-1 (Volume:68pages) 7, DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & MAINTENANCE SERVICING YANMAR N330 7-1. Disassembly & Reassembly of Cylinder Head & Accessories If carbon accumulated on the surface of cylinder head exposed to combustion gas, it hinders combustion. Or if scale adhered to cooling water line, it impedes the cooling effect. Beside, a crack might take place on the combustion surface of cylinder head due to thermal load during an engine rum. Consequently, periodically overhaul clean the cylinder head, (and remove and check its accessories at the same time). 1) Cylinder head [Disassembling sequence] (1) Detach the bonnet, and remove various pipings (fuel, lube oil and air pipes) in the neighborhood of cylinder head (Pay your attention not to lose copper packing, etc, of various pipe joints.) (2) Detach the starting valve. (3) Detach the fuel injection pipe and valve. (@) Remove the suction & exhaust valve rocker arms and rocker arm shaft pedestal as a set. (6) Remove the rocker arm chamber starting valve (6) Take off the boost air duct and exhaust manifold. {@) Detach the indicator (sampling) valve (8) Take off the push rod (as well as its cover at the same time). {@) Detach the exhaust and cooling water thermometers (Be sure not to damage them.) (10) Unscrew the cylinder head clamping nuts with use of a hydraulic jack. (11) Take out the cylinder head with use of an exclusive tool for cylinder head lifting. (When lifting the cylinder head, pay your full attention to catching so that the threading of cylinder head clamping bolts will not be damaged.) [Cautions for overhaul check & reassembly] (1) Check on the state of carbon adhered to the combustion chamber and suction & exhaust holes (for your reference on determining henceforth-servicing interval). Moreover, after cleaning, carefully check to see whether such as crack is resulted or not. Cautions for servicing of an exhaust valve seat. Exhaust valve seats of a low-quality oll specification engine have been incorporated (integrally con- structed) into a cylinder head. Prohibit use of a gas bumer in carbon cleaning of exhaust ports of a cylinder head. If the flame reaches such an exhaust valve seat directly, it shrinks, its O-rings undergo a change of properties, and cooling water might leak from this part. Be cautious of this regard because such troubles as water hammer and burnout of piston result if the engine is run without tak- ing notice of this regard Mae. (2) Check on the state of scale at the jacket part, and clean with such as scale removing agent. Even in the case of a fresh water cooled engine, carty out this cleaning once in about two years at least because there might be a case of much scale adherence as depended on water quality As for such a scale, remove it with a chemical (such as UNICON 146 available from YANMAR) while the engine is in rest without overhauling i. (8) Carefully check the socket and spigot part of the cylinder head fitting surface in particular because if this part has been flawed, blow-by occurs during an engine run. (4) No particular adjustment will be necessary for cylinder head packing because the standard top clear- ance is attained if a packing having the same size as the former is used. (8) After cleaning of various parts, holes and so forth should be cleaned carefully. However, refrain from plugging holes with thing, instead cover the whole of parts involved with a sheet to prevent dust from entering them as much as possible. (©) When fiting a cylinder head, apply lubricating oil to the clamping nut threaded parts. 2) Suction & exhaust valves [Disassembling sequence] (1) Attach the vaive spring detaching/attaching tool to a fuel injection valve clamping stud. (2) Tum the handle of valve spring detaching/attaching tool to hold down the valve rotator, and take out the cotter. Incidentally, when disassembling the valve spring and valve rotator without removal of cylinder head carry out the foregoing steps (1) & (2) with the piston brought to the T.D.C. position. 1 7. DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & MAINTENANCE SERVICING YanMaAR N330 [Cautions for overhaul check & reassembly] (1) In time of disassembly, carefully check the valve spring for any existence of crack and corrosion. (2) Two valve spring shoe cotters are being used for each suction/exhaust valve, In tine of reassembly, use them by a pair and for the same valve, (Unless they are handled by a pair, the valve rod might be damaged due to an inferior contact of the cotter part.) (3) When the valve rotator is detached, disassemble it, and check its interior, too, Fig. 7-7 —S— Valve Spring DetachingiAttaching Taal Fuel Injection valve Clamping Stud Bolt ij f te Ful cton Loy sehe L =| f Upper sua of Cylnie Head [Suction/exhaust valve grinding] [Notice] Do not use any gas bumer to eliminate carbon adherent on the combustion surface and at the exhaust port ‘The loose exhaust valve seat and a deteriorated O-ring may cause a water leakage. (1) Perform the first tine's valve grinding earlier than usual as indicated in Periodical Checking Table given in Section 6, and judging the situation, determine the henceforth servicing interval. (2) Prior to vaive grinding, confirm of the wear of a valve guide and the clearance between the valve guide and the valve rod that serve as criteria on valve working, compare these measured values with the corresponding values indicated in Table of Clearance & Wear Limits of Major Parts given in Sec- tion 11, and then proceed to valve grinding work upon replacing the pertinent parts as required (3) In the case of a deep flaw, correct it by use of a rough correcting seat cutter (with grinder) because satellite has been built on the contact face of a valve seat (seat ring). Cor- rect particularly such a valve upon careful checking it because it will be broken and broken pieces will enter not only the combustion chamber but also the turbocharger, causing a serious secondary dam- age if the valve poppet tip part becomes too thin. To make assurance doubly sure, it is possible to insert it fully to the specified positon if it is ham- ered in ater its fitting-in In case the work with use of iquid nitrogen is not possible to do, put about 1.5 liter of alcohol and 10 kg of dry ice lumps of 10 to 30 mm in diameter into a wide-mouth thermo bottle (having stainless steel intemal lining), place the part to be inserted so as to enclose it with dry ice lumps, and leave it chilled for about one hour. After that, insert the chilled valve guide or valve seat into its place. {@) Since a seat ring tends to have a tit nits insertion, hammer in the sufficiently chilled scat ring with use of a worm-out valve, for instance. Service the valve guard and its guide normally because a fall and so forth take place, they do not work normally, and an abnormal force acts also on the suction/exhaust cam in operation of the engine, caus- ing a possible damage to them if they are used as a gap between them is left too large. 4) Valve rotator (for suc.Jexh. valve) Disassemble and repair a valve rotator at the earliest possible opportunity before it results in poor or no rotation because a blow-by of such a valve and so forth are apt to take place if it ceases to rotate. ‘Such a valve rotator is removable without disassembling the cylinder head ifthe procedure mentioned in Page 7-7 is followed. [Cautions for overhaul check & reassembly] (1) Check to see if coil springs and Ball Racer had been corroded or not. (2) Check for wear of body groove, balls and Ball Racer spring, Such a ball can be used further if its peep-out amount is larger than the wear amount of Belleville spring when itis inserted into the body groove (3) Replace those pars that became defective due to corrosion or wear with the respectively new ones. DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & MAINTENANCE SERVICING YanMaAR N330 5) Adjustment of suc./exh. valve head clearance ‘The valve mechanism of this engine is of such structure to hold down two suction (or exhaust) valves with the same T-shaped valve guard. Consequently, since the valve guard is twisted to cause an abnormal wear to the valve guard guide and valve guide unless two valves are adjusted to be held down simultaneously, carry out their adjustment as follows: Fig. 7-17 Rocker Am Adjust Serow ‘Adjust Screw (1) Allow a cylinder for which adjustment is to be done to assume the position of compression stroke (Do not mistake this position for the top of overtap.) (2) Adjust the valve head clearance by turing little by litle the adjust screw so that the clearances at both spots A & B vanish. After this adjustment, holding the adjust screw with use of a wrench so that the ‘screw will not tum, Clamp the lock nut (3) Next, insert a feeler gauge into @ gap (C) between the rocker arm adjust screw and the valve guard, and adjust the gap to become the specified clearance by tuming the rocker arm adjust screw. After that adjustment, clamp the lock nut securely 6) Fuel injection valve Unsatisfactory servicing of a fuel injection valve has great influence on combustion and output of engine. Since the servicing period for fuel injection valves is hard to be determined sweepingly, determine the checking & servicing period for such a valve according to a change in exhaust temperature, color of exhaust, etc, r2 7. DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & MAINTENANCE SERVICING YanMaAR N330 [Removing sequence & cautions] (1) Remove the fuel injection pipe. Stud Bott Fu njocton cal Upper Surtace of Cylider Head y / ' 7 sant [Cautions for disassembly & reassembly of the injection valve] (1) Disassemble a fuel injection valve only after cleaning the carbon adhered on the nozzle exterior. (Such a cleaning becomes easy if such a valve is immersed in carbon removing agent or undiluted cresol solution.) (2) Detach the parts of a fuel injection valve for its disassembly according to sequence as numbered in Fig. 7-13. (3) In time of nozzle check conduct not only the injection test but also cheek for extent of corrosion of both the interior and the exterior by sulfuric acid. (if the nozzle is found to be extensively corroded, replace it with the new one.) Fig. 7-19 Fuel Injection Valve Disassembling procedure (4) Considering the average life of a nozzle to be about 2,500 hours of operation, you are suggested to possess its spares. (8) In time of reassembly, pay your attention to orientation of inter-spindle and spring shoe. (©) Check if oil is not leaking from the overfiow oil pipes after fitting a fuel injection valve as well as now and then during operation, 713 7. DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & MAINTENANCE SERVICING YanMaAR N330 injection test & adjustment] (1) Attach the injection valve to the nozzle tester. (2) Detach a cap for nozzle (pressure) adjust screw, and adjust the injection pressure to the pertinent value given on Page 3-1 by regulating the tightening-in of the adjust screw. (8) Check for the state of injection by operating the hand lever of nozzle tester rapidly. If the hand lever of the tester is operated slowly at this time, fuel rums down, causing you to err in judgment that the nozzle is out of order. Thus, pay attention to this regard, (4) Maintain the oil pressure of 1.96MPa (20 kgf/cm?) lower from the injection start for conducting an oit- tight test. If fuel oil oozed out from the nozzle tip under this oil pressure condition, the nozzle can be used further as before (5) When replacing the nozzle with the new one as it is found to be defective, first loosen the nozzle (pressure) adjust screw, and then fit the nozzle. Finally, clamp the nozzle lock nut to the specified torque. Clamping torque for nozzle lock nut: 667~706 Nem (68~72 kgfem) Clamping of the nozzle lock nut should be to such an extent that itis advanced by about 35° from its state of being tightened with full force of your hand, After this tightening, conduct a continuous injec- tion test at the specified injection pressure, and confirm of no oil leakage. Pay your attention to a fact that excessive clamping of nozzle lock nut distorts the nozzle and might cause a stick of nozzle and a damage of straight pin. DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & MAINTENANCE SERVICING YanMaAR N330 7) Starting valve Ifthe starting valve sticks or results in poor air tightness, gas flows back to the stop valve and distribut- ing valves, causing a stick and damage of these valves. Consequently, carry out checking and grinding of this valve satisfactorily. The period of checking and grinding of this valve generally follows that of checking and servicing of suc.Jexh. valves. However, when an abnormality is found in the starting valve, itis singly removable without overhauling the cylinder head Fig. 7-22 Starling Valve Disassembling Procedure Packing ‘Apply molyadenum (grease here Staring Valve (1) Disassemble the starting valve in sequence as numbered in the above figure; reassemble it in reverse order of disassembling sequence. DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & MAINTENANCE SERVICING YanMaAR N330 7-2. Disassembly & Reassembly of Piston & Connecting Rod ‘The period of check on a piston by drawing it out varies according to daily maintenance, lube oil control and load (overload and excessively low load) in particular. Therefore, the handling supervisor's discretion is required in this regard. Nevertheless, disassemble and check them for the first time at a time mentioned in Section 6, and henceforth extend or shorten the period as judged on results of the first time's overhaul inspection, an increase of blow-by and an abnormal increase in lube oil consumption. ‘When the lube oil consumption becomes about double the first times, disassemble and clean them, and replace piston/oil rings with the new ones. 1) Disassembly & reassembly of piston & connecting rod Since the connecting rod is a three-divided structure as shown in Fig. 7-23, the piston can be drawn out only if connecting rod bolts provided at the upper part of connecting rod big end. Incidentally, refer to Page 7-17 for disassembly & reassembly of connecting rod big end housing, Disassemble and then reassemble a piston and connecting rod according to the following sequence: (1) Detach cylinder side covers of a piston to be disassembled from both the operation side and the non- operation side. (2) To remove four connecting-rod-bolts from (the upper part of connecting rod, turn the flywheel by means of a motor. Refer back to Subsection 4-1-1 for flywheel turning procedure. (2) To loosen connecting rod bolts, bring the crank-pin to the B.D.C. position (Set the crank-pin in such a position so that a socket wrench will not come in contact with the cylinder side) (4) First of all, loosen four connecting rod bolts provided at the upper part of connecting rod, and then only three bolts are detached.
