Issue; Cancer treatment in Wales
Drugs are becoming more advanced and are now able to treat
more people. 50% of people now survive cancer.
Cost of treatments are high. With 333,000 diagnosed cases, can
we afford treatment?
Health care in Wales is a devolved power. The Welsh Assembly
decides priorities and currently does not offer treatment for all
cancers on the NHS.
People in Wales are moving over the border as they have more
chance of being treated.
How would doctors decide who to treat? If they allow treatment
for a young mother but deny it for an 81 year old, could they be
prosecuted for age discrimination?
Production of cancer drugs involves the use of several
hazardous substances. Strict controls are needed on waste from
drug factories.
