Required Materials:Pen or pencil, two composition notebooks and two 3-prong folders
Course Overview:Seventh grade life science is an introductory course to Biology and Ecology.
Your student will learn about the structure and function of organisms, including themselves, and
how this fits into the natural world around them. Emphasis will be placed on a hands-on learning
approach including open-ended inquiry, active learning, and experiencing science as a junior
scientist. Classes will include a mix of lab activities, group work, lecture, discussions, projects
and presentations. Students will also be conducting an in-depth independent science or
engineering project under the guidance of their teacher.
Life Science Year at a Glance:

Science Inquiry Students will discover, invent and investigate using the skills
necessary to engage in the scientific process. This will include in-class lab activities as
well as an independent science or engineering project.
The Cell Students will be able to describe cell theory and the levels of organization in
organisms
Diversity, Genetics and Evolution Students will be able to describe how traits are
passed down from parent to offspring and how diversity in organisms helps them survive
in changing environments.*
Ecology Students will understand food webs and the role of photosynthesis and cellular
respiration. Students will also explain the interaction and dependence of organisms on
one another and explain how biotic and abiotic factors affect the carrying capacity and
sustainability of an ecosystem.

Grading: 100%-90%: A

89%-80%: B

79%-70%: C

69%-60%: D

<59%: F

Grading Policy: Assignments must be completed in a timely manner. Most homework

assignments will be due during Bellwork time during the first 5 minutes of class. Any
assignment turned in after that time will be considered late and will be deducted 30% of the total
points possible. After an absence, students need to go to the Make-Up Work Folder and collect
their missing assignments upon returning to the classroom. It is the students responsibility to

find and complete missed assignments. Extra credit will not be given; however, students are
encouraged to redo assignments to improve low grades.
To improve low grades on tests or major assignments, students have two options. Option one is
to make test corrections for half credit per correction made. Each corrected answer must have an
explanation about why the corrected answer is the right one along with a reference to the page in
the interactive notebook where the information is found. Students may use notes or textbooks to
complete test corrections. Option two is to re-take another version of the test outside of class
time. Test re-takes may not use notes but full credit will be given for each correct question.
Assignment corrections and test corrections will be accepted until grades close at the end of the
grading period.
Tardy and Restroom Policy:

3 unexcused tardies over the course of a grading period will result in a detention
Students are expected to get water and use the restroom during passing periods and
during recess and lunch, therefore it is helpful to bring a reusable water bottle to class. If
the need arises to leave the classroom during a class period, students need to go during
Bellwork or individual work time. Students may not ask to leave the classroom during
instruction time. Emergency passes will be given once a semester at the teachers
discretion so be sure to use your emergency wisely.

Classroom Expectations:
1.

4.

tolerated. Disruptive behavior, defined as anything that interferes with your teachers ability to
conduct the class or the ability of other students to benefit from the instruction, will not be
tolerated.
