SAFETY OFFICER

Introduction
The best way to develop a safety culture and to
achieve a high standard of safety is to have a
Safety Officer onboard the ship.
On every sea-going ship which more than five
workers are employed, the Company is required to
appoint a safety officer. The master must record
the appointment of a safety officer this should be
in the official logbook, ref MCA Code of Safe
Working Practices for Merchant Seamen para
3.4.1.
This Safety Officer can be suitably qualified by
completing the following course.
The training consists of 6 Computer Based
Training (CBT) modules combined with extracts
from the MCA Code of Safe Working Practices
for Merchant Seamen and a procedure with
workbook and practical exercises.

Course Topics

Seagull will verify all documentation ref the


procedure and workbook. The following must be
sent to SG:
- A copy of test report from CBT modules
# 01, #02, #05, #88, #123 with 95%
completed and a minimum test score of
75%.
- A copy of completed workbook.
- Clear ID of participant (name and date of
birth).
All tests and exercises must be the unaided work
of the individual.
All documentation must be signed and verified by
Master or Assessor and marked with the vessels
stamp.
Successful completion will be acknowledged by
suitable certification.

Duration
Depending on the participants background and
knowledge to the subject. Average time is 1.5
hours per CBT module and 2 3 hours on the
workbook with practical exercises.
