Fundalthismeansbeingontopofthings,andthusestablishingproperrelationswith
thesurroundingworldjustasmuchascultivatinghisartisticcareer.Itsabout
balanceinlifeandinart,inthefinalanalysisalsoaboutformingpartofameaningful
socialcontext,aboutestablishingakindofhumanityandbeingsomethingfor
othersaswellasoneself.SowhenyouconsiderFundalsmusicyoualsohaveto
considerwhatexistsalongsidetheartallthatintheendisthepreconditionforthe
arttobemanifestedintheformofmusicalexpression.
KarstenFundalhasstudiedcompositionwithHansAbrahamsenandIbNrholm,
KarlAageRasmussenandPerNrgrd.AmeetingwithNigelOsborneand(especially)MortonFeldmanin1986at
DartingtontookongreatimportanceforFundalsdevelopmentasacomposer,andintheyears198788hestudied
compositionwithLouisAndriesseninHolland.
Amongthemostimportantofhisotherworkswefindtheviolinconcerto"FloatingLinesBrokenMirrors"(19951996),the
percussionconcertoRitornelloalContrario(19961997)andtheensembleworkwrittenfortheCikadaEnsemble,Circadian
Pulse(20022003).ThentherearethefourworksintheMoebiusseriesandofcoursetheorchestralworksEntropia(1997
2001)forsoloists,choirandlargeorchestrawrittenfortheDanishNationalSymphonyOrchestra/DRandtheorchestral
workHush(20032004).
InrecentyearsKarstenFundalhashadthepleasureofseeingarapidlyincreasinginterestinhismusic,whichhasledtoa
largenumberofcommissionsfornewworks,andhasgraduallywonhimaplaceasoneofthemajorcomposersofhis
generation.Fundalsunmistakabletalenthasalsoevokedaresponseinthefilmworldwhere,aftergreatsuccesswiththe
musicfortheDreyerfilmMikal(2003),premieredlivewiththeCopenhagenPhilharmonic,hewrotethemusicforNikolaj
stergaardsRobertawardwinningdocumentaryOmTro(ShortFilmAboutFaith)(NordiskFilm2005).
MostrecentlyFundalhascompletedtheworkonthemusicfortheepicfilmFlammen&Citronen("FlameandCitron")directed
byOleChristianMadsen(NimbusFilm2008).Itisanimpressiveandwiderangingscoreforthemostexpensivemovieever
producedinDenmark.
KarstenFundalhasbeenawardedtheWilhelmHansenComposersPrize1994,thePrizeoftheDanishComposersSociety
1995,theHvassFoundationsArtistsGrant1995,theQueenIngridMemorialGrant2005andtheCarlNielsenPrize2005.In
2005hereceivedthethreeyeargrantoftheDanishNationalArtsFoundationtodevelopamajormusicfilmprojectabout
globalization.ForthemusicforPeterSchnauFogsfeaturefilmKunstenAtGrdeiKor(2007)("TheArtofCrying")Fundal
wonaRobertforbestscoreandhasthuswonaplaceasthemostimportantcomposerinDanishfilmformanyyears.
