FINE ARTS COURSE-2D ART (Drawing and Painting)

Course Description:
Students in this course will be introduced to art through drawing and painting experiences.
Students will learn how to be engaged learners by learning the skills, techniques and knowledge
used in the visual arts. This course will introduce the students to the art elements, art principles
and famous artwork, which will require the students to be inquiring learners. Students will learn
and gain an understanding of the process of interpreting, critiquing, creating and experiencing art.
The class will participate in art exhibits and learn the important roles of art within their
communities. This course requires the students to work effectively collaborating with their fellow
classmates to create a shared art project as part of their mastery. Students will also participate in
art with other interdisciplinary courses, which will be focusing on critical thinking and creativity
relating to each other. A written paper will be included in this course showing the relationship to
famous artwork and their own art pieces. Students through their art experiences in the Fine Art
Course will discover their roles within their community and the world connected to art.
Materials: Metro requires a $25.00 Art Fee which will cover all the art supplies used in this
course.
Learning Goals:
As a result of the visual art study:

The student will develop critical and creative thinking skills and perceptual awareness for
understanding and producing art.

The student will understand the impact of the visual art on history, culture and society. They
will learn the historical, cultural, social and political contexts that influence the function and role
of visual art.

The student will develop skills necessary for understanding and applying mediums, technique
and processes.

The student will organize the components of a work into a cohesive whole through knowledge
of art elements and art principles.

The student will reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the
work of others.

The student will experience and relate to working artists and their art pieces within the
community along with art exhibits of famous art masterpieces.

The student will perceive connections between visual art and other interdisciplinary courses.
The student will participate in interdisciplinary projects.

UNIT 1: Introduction to Fine Arts


Benchmark: Explain the meaning of Art. What makes it Art? How does one experience Art? How is
it created? What effect does Art have on society?

UNIT 2: Introduction to Drawing (Art Elements- Line, Shape and Space)
Benchmark: Explain and demonstrate the technique of drawing. Learning to draw with the use of
contour line, shape, and space with many different subjects. Learning the techniques of a variety
medium used in drawing.

o Training Hand, Eye and Mind

o Shape Drawings (object drawings and cut paper)
o Space Drawings (outside drawings of landscapes)

UNIT 3: Introduction to Drawing (Art Elements- Value, Texture and Color)
Benchmark: Explain and demonstrate value studies with different mediums. Drawing projects will
represent the study of value, shading, texture and color.

UNIT 4: Introduction to Drawing (Art Principles- Balance, Emphasis, Contrast, and


Proportion)
Benchmark: Explain and demonstrate the use of balance, emphasis, contrast and proportion in a
drawing project. Student drawing project will represent the use of balance, emphasis, contrast and
proportion in their artwork.

UNIT 5: Students will then take several weeks to finish their individual art drawing
before painting is introduced.
UNIT 6: Introduction to Watercolor Painting and Color Theory
Benchmark: Explain and demonstrate the techniques and the process in painting. Learn the many
varieties of mediums used to paint and how to apply them. Learn the mixture of painting to create
a specific color wheel.

UNIT 7: Introduction to Acrylic Painting (Art Principles- Pattern, Rhythm\Movement,
Unity\Harmony and Variety)
Benchmark: Explain and demonstrate the techniques and the process in acrylic painting. Learn the
many ways to apply acrylic paint onto canvas.

UNIT 8: Students will then take several weeks to finish their individual painting
projects.
UNIT 9: Introduction to Written Paper on Famous Artist
Benchmark: Explain and give details of the process of creating an art portfolio on the famous
artists that were introduced during the art course this term.

UNIT 10: Introduction to the Collaborating Art Project

Benchmark: Explain and demonstrate the process of professionally exhibiting pieces of

GRADING: The grading scale for the Fine Art Course is Mastery. All of the art
projects in the 12-week session (including the group project) and the written paper will
be graded. The final for the class will be the Finale Exhibit and Presentation. Student will
be graded on their involvement in experiencing art through following procedures and
techniques. The students exposure to art will show in their final pieces of artwork.
