Multi-Camera Production Roles

You will be producing 3-4 interviews during your chat show. For each interview state who will be
doing which role. You must do EVERY role once during the show.
For more information on what each role entails, visit
http://www.bbc.co.uk/academy/collegeofproduction/collections/job_profiles
And search through the video profiles on the site.
TASK 1: Define each of the following roles
Interviewer
Describe their job they are at the front line of television breaking down the 4th wall between
the production and the audience sat at home they ask professionals about their jobs or latest
news in their preferred field like on graham Norton interviews actors on the new film they have
coming out. They are trying to get information to inform and promote the interviewees
knowledge and career. When the topic is serious and world changing or a dull, mundane
story that is only specific to a unique audience they need to keep the same relaxed attitude so
not to insult people and this makes their job easier to focus on. They are often every involved
with the pre-production, they will sometimes write their own material, which means they are
often very involved in the research aspect. When they take a lot of time in the research and
script writing process it makes it easier for them to remember but also easier to improvise.

Which part of the studio do they work in? they work on set in the rehearsal times as well as being
on the frontline on tv ,being the first person the be seen means they have a lot of confidence to start
the show so they need to rehearse a lot and understand what is happening around them so they
can do their job without hesitation or panicking.

What skills do they need to do their job well? they need to make the interviewee feel
comfortable enough to share what they know, they need to make sure their personality
doesnt overshadow the interviewee, they need to be able to keep the interviewee on topic.
They need an strong unique personality that means they can interact with audience members
and the interviewee. They should be well prepared which means research but also be curious
as to what the interviewee is talking about this is to be done so that they know what questions
should be asked and not making the interviewee repeat themselves.a key thing for the
presenter to be a wear of is regulations set by Ofcom and other regulating bodies so that they
dont insult anyone like top gear used to. This includes being awear of who their audience is,if
it is a children channel then the presenter shouldnt be racist or swear e.c.t

Director
Describe their job the director runs the show, sees how the lighting/microphones are set
up,where the presenters/interviewees and interviewers are placed along with the set of the
show and what costumes. Anything that happens has to be signed off by the manager. They
work closely with the writers producers and designers to enhance the original idea but still
sticking to the shows unique selling point as well as coming up with a unique selling point for
each episode to gain more viewers, this can be done with exclusive interviews with
celebrities. they need to be able to see that each part for the show is equally good from the
lighting to the script and make sure that is it all ready for the shoot.

Production Booklet

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor) they work in the control
room,on set (pre-shoot) and in the editing sweet (post production) they need to be in charge
of part of the show and make sure it is to the brief they were given by the director.

What skills do they need to do their job well?

They need to be able to communicate the writes, designers and producers message
specifically to the rest of the production team to make it entertaining them ned to know all
parts of a production to a high standard. Be conscious that everyone part of the production
knows what they are doing, working well as a team and if pulling their weight and if they arent
find a solution to it. Making sure that everyone knows that the director is in charge while still
respecting them. If a certain Idea doesnt work with the shows USP they should be quick to
think of another idea that will compensate whether it is to do with the visual or script this
needs to put into action as soon as the mind map is finished to the editing. They need to be
organised and have a methodical approach to the production with crew members and ideas.

Camera Person
They hold the camera and make sure nothing goes wrong and if it does go to another camera
and try and get it in a different and effective camera angle. the director usually creates a
camera script which tells them the order of shots for certain scenes or lines. This will be
rehearsed continuously so they or the director can see if the shopts work then. It is cued by
the director during a live performance. The best camera men will beable to predict what the
director wants and be able to improvise if they can interpret what the presenter is going to do

Working on studio is usually done for chat shows, game shows ect these shows are usally
done with multiple cameras and angles are produced buy setting cameras up differently and
the people in the control room on the vision mixer will swap to each one depending on who is
speaking

A good eye with how to capture effective and clear angles that show the interview with precise
detail. You need to know your camera, if anything goes wrong you need to know how to fix it
so it doesnt mess up the show and take money out of the budget. They need to be able to
predict what the presenter is going to do or the director is going to ask, hence why they have
to be familiar with the script.

Sound Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
The sound mix is someone who controls the level of the microphones and make sure everyone on
camera can be heard with equal levels. They also have to switch between live footage and
recorded videos. They work closely with the camera to make sure it doesnt sound like the

Production Booklet

interviewee or presenter is close that the sound makes them seem like they are shouting at the tv,it
should be conversation sound so they work with the camera men to get the right shot of
conversation volume. they also need to cut between audio from pre-recorded footage like location
interviews and the live footage, they work with the people on the vision mixer and the director
during the filming to make sure the sound matches what is on screen.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
Control room with the vision mixer and director but they can also communicate to the boom
operator. But the majority of what the sound man does is in rehearsals making sure all the
microphones are in place and all level,
What skills do they need to do their job well?
Timing and good hearing, they need to be a strong team player with the rest of the crew to over
come problems with the environment which leads me to the next point of being quick thinking over
come problems. They should also know a lot about their equipment and how to use it and fix it if
anything goes wrong.

Vision Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
They switch between live footage and pre-recordings, and preview shots (what the other cameras
are filming but arent being broadcasted on tv) to get different angles. They work with the director
for the director. The picture on the transition monitor is the picture that is transmitted to the tv at
home and this is what the vision mixer controls. They have shot script that coincides with script so
that the person knows which preview shot to cut to.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)

The control room where the vision mixer is and they have all the preview screens and transmission
screen. This is where the director also lives when
What skills do they need to do their job well?

They need good time and communication with the sound control person so they both switch at the
same, they also need to be able to communicate with the camera man in case anything on the
cameras go wrong

Graphics Generator
Describe their job They are the person who creates the title roles at the beginning and the credits of at the end. This
includes logos, videos and images on screen they also create the green screen that gets added in
the post production. They work closely with the director, sound mixer and vision mixerbecause the
graphics effectiveness rely all on cues with sound, visuals and being able to know the set of the
show and the USP of the show to understand if the graphic is suitable.

Production Booklet

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
Control room Graphics would all be created before the production but would be put in the post
preductions. This is things like green screens and credits/titles that the live audience cant see.

What skills do they need to do their job well?

They need to be creative to make the show look unique. A good understanding of what the director
has asked for and should be able to compromise with the rest of the team that if something were to
go wrong, they should know when to step back. They should be quick to resolve problems that
occur like if the green screen isnt flat at the back or if someone on set is casting a shadow that will
prevent an image being put on the green screen. This means they need to be able to communicate
with camera men if they need to move or people on the vision mixers to switch cameras.

Lighting Desk
Describe their job - Reference your research

and they look human and not too pale. They work with the camera men and the people in the control
room on the vision mixing desk to make sure that it can all run smoothly for them.they attend recces
with the camera men and director to ensure they can get a good picture for the actually get a good
shoot.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They work on the floor before rehearsals to make sure they can get a good picture with the camera men
and then during rehearsals when they work with everyone from make up to the director. And then when
the live show happens they can control all the lights from a desking the control room this will be if on of
the lights die then they will have to remotely control it from the desk to gain the best possible lighting
What skills do they need to do their job well?
They need to be able to use the light board and know the set up off by heart so they can fix it if need be.
Work well with the other teams of the production and making sure the lighting is running smoothly to
make their jobs a lot eaier. They should be able to pay close attention have an eye for colour
