(a)Type.Forthepurposeofthispart,thetypesofexitsaredefinedasfollows:
(1)TypeI.Thistypeisafloorlevelexitwitharectangularopeningofnotlessthan24inches
wideby48incheshigh,withcornerradiinotgreaterthaneightinches.
(2)TypeII.Thistypeisarectangularopeningofnotlessthan20incheswideby44incheshigh,
withcornerradiinotgreaterthanseveninches.TypeIIexitsmustbefloorlevelexitsunless
locatedoverthewing,inwhichcasetheymustnothaveastepupinsidetheairplaneofmore
than10inchesnorastepdownoutsidetheairplaneofmorethan17inches.
(3)TypeIII.Thistypeisarectangularopeningofnotlessthan20incheswideby36incheshigh
withcornerradiinotgreaterthanseveninches,andwithastepupinsidetheairplaneofnot
morethan20inches.Iftheexitislocatedoverthewing,thestepdownoutsidetheairplanemay
notexceed27inches.
(4)TypeIV.Thistypeisarectangularopeningofnotlessthan19incheswideby26incheshigh,
withcornerradiinotgreaterthan6.3inches,locatedoverthewing,withastepupinsidethe
airplaneofnotmorethan29inchesandastepdownoutsidetheairplaneofnotmorethan36
inches.
(5)Ventral.Thistypeisanexitfromthepassengercompartmentthroughthepressureshelland
thebottomfuselageskin.Thedimensionsandphysicalconfigurationofthistypeofexitmust
allowatleastthesamerateofegressasaTypeIexitwiththeairplaneinthenormalground
attitude,withlandinggearextended.
(6)Tailcone.Thistypeisanaftexitfromthepassengercompartmentthroughthepressureshell
andthroughanopenableconeofthefuselageaftofthepressureshell.Themeansofopeningthe
tailconemustbesimpleandobviousandmustemployasingleoperation.
(7)TypeA.Thistypeisafloorlevelexitwitharectangularopeningofnotlessthan42inches
wideby72incheshigh,withcornerradiinotgreaterthanseveninches.
(8)TypeB.Thistypeisafloorlevelexitwitharectangularopeningofnotlessthan32inches
wideby72incheshigh,withcornerradiinotgreaterthansixinches.
(9)TypeC.Thistypeisafloorlevelexitwitharectangularopeningofnotlessthan30inches
wideby48incheshigh,withcornerradiinotgreaterthan10inches.
(b)Stepdowndistance.Stepdowndistance,asusedinthissection,meanstheactualdistance
betweenthebottomoftherequiredopeningandausablefoothold,extendingoutfromthe
fuselage,thatislargeenoughtobeeffectivewithoutsearchingbysightorfeel.
(c)Oversizedexits.Openingslargerthanthosespecifiedinthissection,whetherornotof
rectangularshape,maybeusedifthespecifiedrectangularopeningcanbeinscribedwithinthe
openingandthebaseoftheinscribedrectangularopeningmeetsthespecifiedstepupandstep
downheights.
(d)Asymmetry.Exitsofanexitpairneednotbediametricallyoppositeeachothernorofthe
samesizehowever,thenumberofpassengerseatspermittedunderparagraph(g)ofthis
sectionisbasedonthesmallerofthetwoexits.
(e)Uniformity.Exitsmustbedistributedasuniformlyaspractical,takingintoaccountpassenger
seatdistribution.
(f)Location.(1)Eachrequiredpassengeremergencyexitmustbeaccessibletothepassengers
andlocatedwhereitwillaffordthemosteffectivemeansofpassengerevacuation.
(2)Ifonlyonefloorlevelexitpersideisprescribed,andtheairplanedoesnothaveatailconeor
ventralemergencyexit,thefloorlevelexitsmustbeintherearwardpartofthepassenger
compartmentunlessanotherlocationaffordsamoreeffectivemeansofpassengerevacuation.
(3)Ifmorethanonefloorlevelexitpersideisprescribed,andtheairplanedoesnothavea
combinationcargoandpassengerconfiguration,atleastonefloorlevelexitmustbelocatedin
eachsideneareachendofthecabin.
(4)Foranairplanethatisrequiredtohavemorethanonepassengeremergencyexitforeach
sideofthefuselage,nopassengeremergencyexitshallbemorethan60feetfromanyadjacent
passengeremergencyexitonthesamesideofthesamedeckofthefuselage,asmeasured

paralleltotheairplane'slongitudinalaxisbetweenthenearestexitedges.
(g)Typeandnumberrequired.Themaximumnumberofpassengerseatspermitteddependson
thetypeandnumberofexitsinstalledineachsideofthefuselage.Exceptasfurtherrestrictedin
paragraphs(g)(1)through(g)(9)ofthissection,themaximumnumberofpassengerseats
permittedforeachexitofaspecifictypeinstalledineachsideofthefuselageisasfollows:

(1)Forapassengerseatingconfigurationof1to9seats,theremustbeatleastoneTypeIVor
largeroverwingexitineachsideofthefuselageor,ifoverwingexitsarenotprovided,atleast
oneexitineachsidethatmeetstheminimumdimensionsofaTypeIIIexit.
(2)Forapassengerseatingconfigurationofmorethan9seats,eachexitmustbeaTypeIIIor
largerexit.
(3)Forapassengerseatingconfigurationof10to19seats,theremustbeatleastoneTypeIIIor
largerexitineachsideofthefuselage.
(4)Forapassengerseatingconfigurationof20to40seats,theremustbeatleasttwoexits,one
ofwhichmustbeaTypeIIorlargerexit,ineachsideofthefuselage.
(5)Forapassengerseatingconfigurationof41to110seats,theremustbeatleasttwoexits,
oneofwhichmustbeaTypeIorlargerexit,ineachsideofthefuselage.
(6)Forapassengerseatingconfigurationofmorethan110seats,theemergencyexitsineach
sideofthefuselagemustincludeatleasttwoTypeIorlargerexits.
(7)ThecombinedmaximumnumberofpassengerseatspermittedforallTypeIIIexitsis70,and
thecombinedmaximumnumberofpassengerseatspermittedfortwoTypeIIIexitsineachside
ofthefuselagethatareseparatedbyfewerthanthreepassengerseatrowsis65.
(8)IfaTypeA,TypeB,orTypeCexitisinstalled,theremustbeatleasttwoTypeCorlarger
exitsineachsideofthefuselage.
(9)Ifapassengerventralortailconeexitisinstalledandthatexitprovidesatleastthesame
rateofegressasaTypeIIIexitwiththeairplaneinthemostadverseexitopeningconditionthat
wouldresultfromthecollapseofoneormorelegsofthelandinggear,anincreaseinthe
passengerseatingconfigurationispermittedasfollows:
(i)Foraventralexit,12additionalpassengerseats.
(ii)Foratailconeexitincorporatingafloorlevelopeningofnotlessthan20incheswideby60
incheshigh,withcornerradiinotgreaterthanseveninches,inthepressureshelland
incorporatinganapprovedassistmeansinaccordancewith25.810(a),25additionalpassenger
seats.
(iii)Foratailconeexitincorporatinganopeninginthepressureshellwhichisatleastequivalent
toaTypeIIIemergencyexitwithrespecttodimensions,stepupandstepdowndistance,and
withthetopoftheopeningnotlessthan56inchesfromthepassengercompartmentfloor,15
additionalpassengerseats.
(h)Excessexits.Eachemergencyexitinthepassengercompartmentinexcessoftheminimum
numberofrequiredemergencyexitsmustmeettheapplicablerequirementsof25.809through
25.812,andmustbereadilyaccessible.
(i)Ditchingemergencyexitsforpassengers.Whetherornotditchingcertificationisrequested,
ditchingemergencyexitsmustbeprovidedinaccordancewiththefollowingrequirements,unless
theemergencyexitsrequiredbyparagraph(g)ofthissectionalreadymeetthem:
(1)Forairplanesthathaveapassengerseatingconfigurationofnineorfewerseats,excluding
pilotseats,oneexitabovethewaterlineineachsideoftheairplane,meetingatleastthe
dimensionsofaTypeIVexit.
(2)Forairplanesthathaveapassengerseatingconfigurationof10ofmoreseats,excludingpilot
seats,oneexitabovethewaterlineinasideoftheairplane,meetingatleastthedimensionsofa
TypeIIIexitforeachunit(orpartofaunit)of35passengerseats,butnolessthantwosuch
exitsinthepassengercabin,withoneoneachsideoftheairplane.Thepassengerseat/exitratio
maybeincreasedthroughtheuseoflargerexits,orothermeans,provideditisshownthatthe
evacuationcapabilityduringditchinghasbeenimprovedaccordingly.
(3)Ifitisimpracticaltolocatesideexitsabovethewaterline,thesideexitsmustbereplacedby
anequalnumberofreadilyaccessibleoverheadhatchesofnotlessthanthedimensionsofa
TypeIIIexit,exceptthatforairplaneswithapassengerconfigurationof35orfewerseats,
excludingpilotseats,thetworequiredTypeIIIsideexitsneedbereplacedbyonlyoneoverhead
hatch.
(j)Flightcrewemergencyexits.Forairplanesinwhichtheproximityofpassengeremergency
exitstotheflightcrewareadoesnotofferaconvenientandreadilyaccessiblemeansof
evacuationoftheflightcrew,andforallairplaneshavingapassengerseatingcapacitygreater
than20,flightcrewexitsshallbelocatedintheflightcrewarea.Suchexitsshallbeofsufficient

sizeandsolocatedastopermitrapidevacuationbythecrew.Oneexitshallbeprovidedoneach
sideoftheairplaneor,alternatively,atophatchshallbeprovided.Eachexitmustencompass
anunobstructedrectangularopeningofatleast19by20inchesunlesssatisfactoryexitutilitycan
bedemonstratedbyatypicalcrewmember.
