Social Injustice of Gender and Race
The gap of race and gender is much broader than most people think. According to The
World Bank, the division of gender inequality involves unfair payment, forced marriages, and
stereotypes. Racism includes the unfair treatment given by society. Therefore all people should
have the same equal rights regardless of their color or gender.
According to the Department of Labor, in 2015, only half of the worlds working age
women are in labor force, compared to 77 percent of working age men. For far too long women
have had the disadvantages in labor force, payment, and forced marriages. An example of unfair
payment is women earn just 78 cents for every dollar a man earns (The White House).
Forced marriages have continued to proceed far more than expected. Over 15 million girls are
forced to marry a stranger before the age of 18 because they do not have the right to have a
voice. In To Kill a Mockingbird a six year old girl best known as, Scout, is constantly being
put down by her older brother, Jem. Throughout the book Jem makes stereotyped comments
towards Scout. For example, Scout, Im telling you for the last time, shut your trap or go homeI declare to the Lord youre getting more like a girl every day! (Jem Finch). As a result, it is
proven that it is wrong to judge women based on their gender.

Modern discrimination is often combined with historical events. Statistics show more
than 3/5 of African Americans have been unfairly treated by the police after the Ferguson
shooting. According to Jesse J. Holland, a reporter who interviewed multiple African Americans
stated, 66 percent of blacks said they only sometimes, rarely or never trust the police to do what
is right. Considering the stereotypes, Negros has been wrongly treated with violent force. This
past year Charleston, had suffered a church shooting. CBS news reports, A white man opened
fired in a historic black church in Charleston, killing nine people Dylan Roof was arrested in
North Carolina and extradited to South Carolina June 18, 2015 for what authorities are calling a
hate crime. In To Kill a Mockingbird, an African American man, Tom Robinson is accused of
raping a young white girl. Even though Mr. Robinson is not cable of the crime, he is force to trial
against the accusation in order to defend himself. Though out the book Whites believe that
Blacks should not have the same equal rights as them. The Whites accuse Negros of acts that
they did not commit. In other words racial equality is a vital key factor to a fair and healthy
society.
Its been proven in literature and research that women and African Americans have unfair
rights because of their sex and race. These stereotypes have led to violence, death, and wrongly
accused accusations. It is a shame that groups of people are defined based off another persons
crime. Therefore people of all color and gender should share the same equal civil rights.
